Not sure I get desire to have a game in Varsity when Holmes is right down the street. This different than somewhere like NC State. For every game, the students have to drive, take a bus, etc. to get to PNC for the game. As such, I see a reason to have a game or two in Reynolds if an easy opponent that students may not attend unless on campus. My personal opinion is that, from strict fan perspective, that State wishes the facility was on campus... Holmes is basically on campus..so, no need...just my opinion
Ditto

Are folks really claiming students can’t walk down street to Holmes for a game? Are you kidding me? Holmes looks like a real arena vs a gym. It looked great on tv with video boards etc. the location is perfectly fine for 18-22 year olds to walk. Keep putting a good product on the court and they will continue to come.

The Cremins era was as good of an atmosphere, limited only by size of the arena, as anywhere. Varsity could have been renovated and brought up to what was needed but other decisions were made obviously. Might not have been the best decisions.
Could we logistically host a game in Varsity? Haven't been inside Varsity since 2014. I'd like to see a couple games be played there as it is the center of campus and could be a really nice student environment. Other universities have spent some money renovating historic gyms as such and playing games at those venues.

I'd say no.
Hope those photos aren't current. We at least need to get some better lighting in there for other programs. Hope we have funds set aside for improving the interior of Varsity, Wrestling deserves better.
There are bright lights where there need to be lights, on the mat. That's a great venue for wrestling. I don't imagine the photos do it justice.

Pretty sure that's how the lighting is set up for wrestling with the lights focused on the mat. There is a lighting that encompasses the entire facility but are not turned on for wrestling.

I don’t think it’s feasible without a substantial investment . Return on investment would not be there. My opinion.

Cost would definitely outweigh the return especially with where the debt markets are.

I've been to a couple of games in Reynolds and I thought it was kind of crappy. Small and tight seats and heaven forbid we had to sit behind the basket where there are endless rows- horrible view I'm sure. Varsity had it's time but everything old isn't great.

I agree with one of the folks above. It's not like Holmes is way off at the State Farm field site and it would require a bus or drive. It's still right on campus. There is really no excuse for small crowds. Even 5k total would look and sound good.

Location of Holmes should be no factor. Students don’t come because they have to walk an extra 400 yards? Hogwash.

I think in the next 5 years, Holmes needs to be gutted and re-furbished. Take out 2,000 seats so it's a capacity of 6,000ish, add luxury boxes to help pay off the debt, improve concessions, make it so you don't have to climb up so many steps to get in, add more class space and pitch that damn roof so it stops leaking. Also, they should add a practice court on the 321 side in that open space. The only negative is that you'll have that nice parking deck with a bridge going to an arena no one is using.

It might take over a year to do this, so spruce up Varsity for a year of basketball and volleyball games. They would need to do a completely new hardwood floor in Varsity anyway, so do it beforehand. I know JohnMark Bentley said they're adding more bleachers and a new videoboard to Varsity for wrestling, so that's a start.

There have been long term discussions about luxury seating at HCC, but it’s way out. At least they’re finally getting the team spaces up to snuff, though.

What’s the scope of work for $30,000,000?
Can build a new arena at that cost.
You can build a 600,000 SF Industrial building at that cost.

I do not believe you can build a nice gymnasium for only $30 million.
Maybe renovate Holmes..but definitely not build

Probably not a 8k-10k seat one. But maybe a 5-6k one. $30M is a ton to renovate, that sounds like a full gut. For reference, NEZ cost $50M I believe.

Georgia States cost $85M, whew. 7500 seats.

I think the new indoor facility is in the $25m range.

Holmes today would cost $60M, maybe more.

To build it the way we would want it, yes.

Not to go down a rabbit hole…but this one of the coolest college arenas I have seen. Idaho Vandals.

I’m a contractor add a minimum 10% to that.
