G5 Over the Last 9 Years
Update from a post I put together mid season
1. I would say that we have been the Most Consistent Winning G5 program and set the standard over the last 9 seasons. (some schools have had bigger Flash seasons with an NY6 game or rankings)
2. Other than Memphis, our dip was not as drastic as the other other Top 12 programs
3. Four of these programs in the Top 12 are becoming P5 programs and I would venture that others in the Top 12 (plus, a ton of schools not in the Top 12) have larger budgets than App. State
4. It is hard to consistently win 2/3 of the games you play.
For arguments sake:
0-1 win (awful)
2 to 4 wins-- a bad year
5-7 wins-mediocre
8-10 wins-good
11+- excellent
For Perspective:
Number of Wins Per Year Since 2015
App St. 11 10 9 11 13 9 10 6 9- 88 total. (one mediocre, 5 good, 3 excellent). 8 or more wins EIGHT TIMES

Re: G5 Over the Last 9 Years
With the portal and NIL looking back will be difficult going forward. The landscape has changed dramatically. If you aren’t a high recruit sign to a G5, prove your worth and chase the money. Smart thing to do.

Re: G5 Over the Last 9 Years
While there are examples of that, I don't think it's become that prevalent. I think more of the movement has been P5 to P5 when it comes to the big NIL deals.
Regardless, we will still be competing among our peer G5 institutions and some will be more successful than others. Over the last 9 years, we're at the top of the G5!

Re: G5 Over the Last 9 Years
All reports indicate we are well behind our peers in terms of NIL money. That could make it difficult for us to remain near the top of the G5.WASU 93 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 12:16 amWhile there are examples of that, I don't think it's become that prevalent. Unless we start losing guys to peer schools, and I am talking about players leaving App, then I don’t see this as a huge problem.

Re: G5 Over the Last 9 Years
I have to ask again. Since the Portal started what is the percentage (overall) of the number of players who have "upgraded" so to speak? When I say upgrade I mean moving from FCS to G5 or G5 to P5 and after the "upgrade" how many saw increased playing time? Also since NIL how many players have gone from making zero (ONLY on a paid scholarship) to receiving some type of NIL? I'm willing to bet that both are lower than one would expect. For the most part businesses are not dumb and I can't see a reputable business just forking out money to an average college football or basketball player. While we love App football and basketball the reality remains that most of the guys we sign weren't wanted by the big boys. We do get those hidden gems who come to Boone and flourish. If we get a few who are fortunate enough to get a crazy offer they can't refuse and that we can't match god bless them. If we also have a few who are strictly in it for a cash grab and will transfer for what is really pocket change then they were not meant to be here in the first place.

Re: G5 Over the Last 9 Years
Thanks for updating this information. It really is very telling when you can see the numbers compared to other schools. We are clearly the class of G5 and we seem to have come out of our slump very well and are positioned for continued success in the future. I really wonder how the naysayers view this information, my best guess is they would say that we should have won even more than we have even though we have won more than any other G5 school. As always, It's great to be a Mountaineer.

Re: G5 Over the Last 9 Years
What's scary is now even if you recruit and build a high success team with underclassmen.....you have to plan the next year just like after a successful year with seniors.
One and done basketball is simpler than football. 5 positions with two deep basketball is a breeze beside of 11 Offense three deep and 11 Defense three deep plus special teams.
Not to mention opt out situations and injury.

This shows one thing from all of the work WASU did!!!!
IT IS GREAT TO BE A MOUNTAINEER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
P.S. We were darn close to more wins last year. This team is very close to being a monster.
I think we will run all over the SBC next year.

Re: G5 Over the Last 9 Years
I’ve said this for years, and I still believe it: App’s fan base has been spoiled by this sustained success.
What we’re dealing with this season is what most other college football fans expect from their teams. App hasn’t experienced many losing seasons, so our fans don’t know how to deal with it.

Re: G5 Over the Last 9 Years
Great post, I agree that both the NIL and portal impact have been used and exaggerated to explain our lack of on field talent. And yes we are competing pretty much in an apples to apples situation with peer programs.WASU 93 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 12:16 amWhile there are examples of that, I don't think it's become that prevalent. Re: G5 Over the Last 9 Years
I would like to see as well. I have not seen anything official from TIGMA or the App State Athletics Department that says we are behind our peers. We might be losing players to the ACC or SEC but we don't have players leaving for NIL at G5 schools. It would be nice to see actual numbers.Mjohn1988 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 21, 2024 8:15 amWhat reports? Re: G5 Over the Last 9 Years
We will never see this information but best I can tell we have really only lost one guy to G5 over NIL money, McCloud. Yes Nate left but that was more than money. Guy couldn’t do squat here the last couple of years and is having 100 yard games against SEC competition at Mizzu. Kind of tells you we have an O line issue.AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 21, 2024 8:55 amI would like to see as well. Re: G5 Over the Last 9 Years
McCloud went to Auburn and that is SEC as well. We have not lost a quality player to a peer school due to NIL yet. We all agree we have an OL issue. Go look at our HS recruiting on the OL and the results since 2020 are really bad. We have had 3 years since 2000 where we did not have a single OL HS recruit pan out.Mjohn1988 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 21, 2024 9:11 amWe will never see this information but best I can tell we have really only lost one guy to G5 over NIL money, McCloud. We might be losing players to the ACC or SEC but we don't have players leaving for NIL at G5 schools. It would be nice to see actual numbers.Mjohn1988 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 21, 2024 8:15 amWhat reports? Please point us to those reports.JTApps1 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 7:26 amAll reports indicate we are well behind our peers in terms of NIL money. That could make it difficult for us to remain near the top of the G5.WASU 93 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 12:16 am
