Positives out of Ga. Game
Positives out of Ga. Game
I haven't seen much said about the game and quite frankly I think because it is because there was not a lot to b*tch about.
HIgh Points
1. Kids played hard "The Chancellor" was a beast. Kids played between the lines and did NOT get caught up in the Ga. late hits, personal foul mess.
2. Play calling/game plan was on target....give us a little more depth and we will be a lot more competitive.
3. Defensively we had a good plan and executed the plan.
4. Imitation is the greatest form of flattery! Did anyone notice the 3-5-3 defense Jawja laid out there against us? We used it a couple of times against them...
5. For what we were trying to do the line play was not bad.
6. The energy on the sidelines was good.
7. The App sections were holding their own....I would like to know if we could be heard?
Below the bar.
1. Love the kid but the burst of speed Kam had is missing. The ACL injury is just so crazy as far as how different people come off the injury!
2. Shaq Counts has got to stop the procedure fouls....good lord! He has to be averaging 1+ a game.
3. So in SEC games is there a rule about gum....both of the kids with me had to "throw away" their gum....whole pack...upon entering the stadium....WHATEVER!
Point of Reference
1. At the half, up by 8, there was a stream of people leaving the stadium. Soooo it happens to teams who are 8-2 as well as those 2-8. SEC and SoCon.

weird thing about the gum, although any type of bottled drink you bought, they took the cap away and wouldn't give it to you "according to state law". what the hell kind of law is that?

I was down in Section 144 and enjoyed being part of "State!" for a change. We were treated well by UGA fans we met.
Another high point that bears mentioning is the beast of a catch by Tony Washington. Man, I'm gonna miss Peacock and Washington next year! They really have given their all to Appalachian State.

Re: Positives out of Ga. Game
I was pleasantly surprised by the hospitality shown by Georgia fans. Several thanked me for coming and not one bad remark from anyone. Living in Atlanta I get sick of hearing about Georgia all the time and thought GA fans were obnoxious. But compared to Ga Southern fans they were saints. Was also surprised by the App turnout for the game given our record. Loud and enthusiastic.
Re: Positives out of Ga. Game
A lady at the concession said someone threw a full bottle years ago and really injured someone. I guess the theory is that some of the liquid will spill out on a long throw without the cap and lessen the impact.
Did anyone else hear the boos as Georgia was heading in at halftime? I'd love to find that on YouTube.

I thought the Boos were aimed at the refs...I could be wrong
We were treated great all day as well. Inside the stadium and out. A couple of folks even welcomed us to Athens. Contrast that to the juvenile abuse we have hurled our way every trip to the Whee and the Stink. Although, to be fair, had we been from Auburn or some other SEC rival, we may not have received such a welcome.
I really enjoyed that first half. It was the first time in a money game since Michigan that we didn't get rolled over and look totally inept from the opening whistle. I liked the play calls, the execution, and the enthusiasm I saw.We were completely outclassed on the depth charts and yet we stood up to them, played hard and gave us something to look forward to down the line. I wish Georgia hadn't have caught fire like they did in the second half, but that didn't spoil the positives for me.

Re: Positives out of Ga. Game
Looks to me like SS and staff are rounding the corner with this team. It takes time to build. This game had potential to have been ugly, in spite of the final score, the team was prepared more so than a lot of other games against 85 scholarship in the past, except Michigan.
Wouldn't it have been interesting to have had the talent level that beat Michigan, playing in Athens last Saturday?
Anyway we have an ugly record this season, but we all should be seeing the positives develop each week.

Re: Positives out of Ga. Game
looking at the halftime stats, almost dead even, got out of there with no serious injuries, just don't have the depth, yet, to be able to play 60 minutes with those guys. Its a slow process, but things seem to be getting better.

A win over the Apps impressed the voters enough to vault Georgia
back into the AP top 25. I'll take that as a positive.

To put the Georgia game in perspective. I attended the Michigan game and also the Florida, VaTech, and ECU games. I truly believe we played Georgia to win! In the first half we had four scoring opportunities and controlled the clock. The motion penalties really hurt. Coach S had the team ready. Obvioulsy, we had a mountain to climb, but the important thing is that "we tried." I'm very proud of this team. They showed a "True Mountaineer Heart." Go App!!!

Re: Positives out of Ga. Game
A very encouraging first half for sure. And the second half was a valuable experience as well- Hostile environment, outcome determined, opposing team and coach wanting to hang as many points on you as they can, wild-eyed SEC second and third stringers out for their moments of glory, etc...
There was nowhere to hide, that's for sure. If the team can face that, why the heck should they fear the Woof or the Whee?
We're battle tested and now starting to show real improvement. Hats off to Peacock and Washington who are showing true APP Pride to the end. It's November, and those suspensions and early losses mean squat now. Let's punch these last two chumps in the mouth, raise OUR jug, and move on to better and brighter things.
GO APPS!

Re: Positives out of Ga. Game
I remember the original agreement called for them to pay us $300,000, how much did they end up having to pay?

Re: Positives out of Ga. Game
Doubt they paid a dime over the $300,000.

Having attended all of those games and LSU in 2008, I'd say you're spot on. Our lack of kicking game and the illegal procedure calls on the O-line hurt.appgrunt71 wrote:To put the Georgia game in perspective. There have been several FBS v FCS games this year that ended up going to a running clock to keep the misery under control. There was definitely no need for a running clock at Athens.

I was in Georgia today and one of the "insiders" said Richt peeled the paint off the walls at halftime... I can believe it.
Re: Positives out of Ga. Game
its really encouraging that this late in the season, with all the bad things that has happened, that the coaching staff can still get them ready to play, and they are still playing with enthusiasm. If we are being fair, SS and the coaching staff deserves alot credit keeping this team togeather, postitive, and playing hard, regardless of the score.

Re: Positives out of Ga. Game
I can promise you this. That was one hell of a 1st half for sure. I felt we were in it the entire time.
When we have to go against Georgia's #1 and #2s vs our #1s, we get worn down. This is what happened in the 2nd half. Their #2s are still better than our #1s for the most part. If our #2s were as good as their #2s, this would have been a lot closer game.
Like I have stated before, we will be JUST FINE in time, I PROMISE
Go Apps!!! We win our last two games.

I'm sure he did - he really blew-off the sideline (local guy) reporter at halftime ---YesAppCan wrote:I was in Georgia today and one of the "insiders" said Richt peeled the paint off the walls at halftime... I can believe it.

Re: Positives out of Ga. Game
We had a group of about 6 App and 8 UGA fans that were tailgating together in the lot just across from the stadium near the railroad tracks. We had a lot of people stopping by from both schools and everything was very positive. I sat on the UGA side in the club section right next to the booth where Brownie and Jax were announcing the game. Nothing but UGA fans in that section and they were great, much like the Michigan fans. They did get a little pissed at the officials when the 2 pass interference penalties were called back-to-back but overall were complimentary of App's efforts. I could see the 2 groups of App fans in the upper deck across from us and was proud when they made some noise. I doubt they could hear me.
I'd like to play there again in a couple of years when we are on more equal footing. At any rate I was very proud of the Apps and they played well and certainly didn't play scared in the least. Some of the biggest hits of the day were delivered by our guys.

Re: Positives out of Ga. Game
First time poster but have followed the board all season - great stuff. I haven’t posted for a couple of reasons, one is because I haven’t seen a game live all season but had the opportunity to visit Athens and two my son is on the team (freshman) so I don’t want to be ” that Dad.”
A couple of thoughts:
1) UGA was huge everywhere, 6'5" safeties, 6’6" TE's - the list goes on. I thought we looked very undersized
2) With that said our skill guys really held their own and the O Line did well on pass blocking, best I’ve seen all year.
3) D played Gurley well – kids a beast and he had to work for every yard. He averaged 5 yards a carry but some of those were minimal gains with the occasional 10 yarder but no huge plays for him.
4) I thought our much maligned special team played well. They stuffed a fake punt and coverage’s weren’t too bad. I know we missed 2 FG’s but they looked prepared is probably the most important thing.
5) Play calling was the best I’ve seen this year as well
6) The team was loose and it showed on the field – they were told to go out and have fun all week and I think that made them more relaxed. I think the early expectations stared to weigh down on this team and what I saw Saturday were kids just playing the game.
There were plenty of areas for improvement but those have been dissected enough all season.
Keep up the great posts and analysis, I’ve really learned a lot about the traditions and legacy of App State football and have grown to love the school in a short amount of time and that’s saying something from a lifelong SEC guy!
