Recruiting since Michigan Win
I don't see where Steve Brown gets the comment that we didn't recruit well since the Michigan win. We presently have 12 former players in the NFL in various roles.

I believe Brownie was speaking mostly with our areas of need the past few seasons, and the glaring one is on the OL. I don't see where any argument can be made to the contrary regarding the OL.

We've recruited well for the skill positions, but the Big Uglies were neglected after we lost Elliot. And the hiring of McClain really killed us. That man was a cancer from which we are still recovering.

Cadet was a transfer, so I don't count him
Why would a transfer not count? He still had to be recruited and signed.

If I recall correctly, Elliot took one or two with him.

As our head coach gains more and more head coaching experience, recruiting is the most important thing in the world. Without better recruiting we cannot even hang with some of the SBC teams. Look forward to future games where we have decent back ups and our player level does not go downhill so much.

Re: Recruiting since Michigan Win
It is fact that we haven't recruited well since 3 consecutive national championships and a win over Michigan. That is one facet as to why The Committee is gone. It took a lot to muck up those great reruiting advantages at the FCS level and have the program slide head first into the first losing season in a long, long while.JCline0429 wrote:I don't see where Steve Brown gets the comment that we didn't recruit well since the Michigan win. Let's see how the committee emigrated to WCU does Saturday.

Maybe The Committee can get L'il Mo to make a cameo on their sidelines? Or would that be like getting The Beatles back together?JCline0429 wrote:Black Saturday wrote:It is fact that we haven't recruited well since 3 consecutive national championships and a win over Michigan. Well, the number one complaint that I see2 on the Cant board is the play calling, especially those beloved one yard dives on first down. I get a huge chuckle every time I see one of those comments on there.

That is not a fact it is an opinion. We did not slide into the losing season we fell off a cliff into it. There were many reasons for that and they have been hashed over on here a hundred times. No one thing led up to this and the recruiting excuse is worn out. We need some more OL guys no doubt but our problems this year went way beyond that.Black Saturday wrote:It is fact that we haven't recruited well since 3 consecutive national championships and a win over Michigan. I don't see how anyone can look at how the program has deteriorated since 2007 and not admit the former staff squandered what had to be the greatest opportunity any FCS team in history ever enjoyed.bcoach wrote:That is not a fact it is an opinion. And I don't see how anyone can talk about a program that wins conference championships every year a deteriorating program to the degree some would like us to think. Some problems like EVERY program has? Sure no doubt. A continual deterioration since 2007? Not hardly. Not winning a fourth NC in a row is not a program falling apart.Kgfish wrote:I don't see how anyone can look at how the program has deteriorated since 2007 and not admit the former staff squandered what had to be the greatest opportunity any FCS team in history ever enjoyed.bcoach wrote:That is not a fact it is an opinion. Re: Recruiting since Michigan Win
AMEN!!! bcoach --- I'm sick of hearing how this program has gone off the cliff since 2007 - We lost great coaches - Elliott to USC, Dillman to UF, his replacement to Colorado, Galloway to WVU, John Wiley as Associate Head Coach to ECU and of course Scott Satterfield for several years - These guys didn't take jobs at Savannah State or Davidson - they all moved well up the scale and it was because of the success APP had had - How do you replace such quality??? - Also, is there any FCS who has put more players into the NFL since 2007? - I doubt it seriously --- 8 of 9 SoCon championships - 8 straight years of playoff appearances - Is there another FCS that has matched all of that since 2005? - NO --- if the definition of success in winning national championships and nothing less will do, then I guess those of you that feel that way certainly see us going off the cliff - but you know what? - you'll need to readjust your ultimate goals now because there is no conceivable way at this point in time to ever see a National Championship back in Boone ---bcoach wrote:And I don't see how anyone can talk about a program that wins conference championships every year a deteriorating program to the degree some would like us to think. Re: Recruiting since Michigan Win
APP was the Alabama of the FCS, albeit playing in the Sunbelt equivalent conference/ SoCon during that time. Nothing wrong with winning conference championships every year. Our roster disparity eluded that APP could nearly have slept walked to those each year. Being blasted from playoff games on your home field with superior talent and looking like you didn't have a clue is not acceptable if maintaining the pinnacle of the sport is on the table. What is wrong with being judged for not living to your potential? The iron was hot during the run, someone fell asleep at the forge. There should have been no trouble filling gaps with quality leadership and top notch FCS talent that wanted to be a part of a winning tradition. Everyone wants to be a winner. What happened to the reloading theory? The buck stopped somewhere? Complacency everyone?

Re: Recruiting since Michigan Win
Recruiting success should be based not only on the talent level of the recruits, but also on their character. I think we have taken some chances in that regard, and we have been paying the price (no pun intended). This has been the trend for several years now; recently, I have been more concerned about the character of some of our players than their talent level.
