As I have already pointed out twice, the difference is that the university specifically says what the pronunciation should be. They make no mention of Appy. Huge difference if you choose to see it.

Granted. The University can't sit around and publish every offensive term that can be thrown out such as the ones the Elon folks like to throw out : "crapalachian" But when I lived in PA, I never gave a thought to residents mispronouncing Appalachian.

We can't be ASU anymore either in the Sunbelt because of AR State took it.

WE ARE APP STATE !!!!!

ITS GREAT TO BE A MOUNTAINEER !!!!!
There may be something different on a uniform, a web page, or a poster, but we will ALWAYS, always, always, be ASU. We have chanted it in visitors stadiums. We have chanted it at the ROCK. We have chanted it in airplanes and buses. We have chanted it in the BIG HOUSE and at 3 National Championships. We have chanted it from ECU to Hawaii, and not many teams have covered that distance. So even if they change it in programs, and official contracts, if nowhere else we will always chant ASU in our hearts.

My in-laws live in Carisle, PA. I never let an opportunity go by to explain how and why it's pronounced App-ah-latch-un.

Gotta call an "Oh, good grief!" on all the name discussion. It seems to me that The Dude simply wanted to offer a compliment and well wishes.

Yes, Appalachian State University is, grammatically speaking, a proper noun. That means it is to be pronounced as the "owner" of the proper noun dictates. I believe we can be polite about educating folks on why we say App-a-latch-un just as some of us have the pleasure of explaining our names to folks.

By the way, my last name is pronounced ERK-ert, but I won't bust your chops if you mispronounce it.

We've been ASU since the late '60's. It's preposterous that we have to change our acronym.

I like App State as our modern brand and I'm glad we're distancing from ASU for official purposes, but nothing beats the rally call of "A-S-U, A-S-U, A-S-U!!"

We could always put a "THE" before the ASU:

The ASU
Go APPS!
