I would imagine JP Caruso would be a part of the QB competition if he is not redshirted. Pretty sure I read where he is enrolling in January. With Kam looking more comfortable by the game I certainly feel better about his future. I had a good conversation with a former player that feels certain that Kam can improve on his deep ball. He was quick to point out that Richie's arm as an underclass men was not good. It took a good two years + to develope his arm strength.AppAttack wrote:Who is expected to compete with Kam besides Taylor Lamb?
Any new WR's expected to make an impact? We'll need them with the loss of Andrew, Tony (and Price).

Re: 2014: What are you excited about?
Last reports that I have were that Caruso was still planning to enroll for Spring. I'll post in the recruiting thread if anything changes. I expect us to bring in 1 more QB in this class and I believe, unless something changes, it will be Penny Smith and his teammate RB Daryl Rollins. I believe they are on the top of our list right now, they want to play together and, by all reports, we are very high, if not the highest, on their list. Anything can happen but the teammate thing seems to be working for us this year. Both would be great gets for us and great additions for the future. Smith is a true dual threat and Rollins leaves fire behind him when he runs. We sign Caruso and Boyd and get Smith and Rollins then QB and RB are pretty stacked for the next few years.proasu89 wrote:I would imagine JP Caruso would be a part of the QB competition if he is not redshirted. Re: 2014: What are you excited about?
WR to look for next year would be Beathard's role increasing and newcomers would be Dante Jones and Jacquil Capel, both whom were RS this year. And, if healthy we'll see Sumler get in the mix. I would expect to see D Jones and McElfresh battle for Peacock's spot and maybe Capel and Beatheard for Tony'sAppAttack wrote:Who is expected to compete with Kam besides Taylor Lamb?

Malachi should have a breakout year next year

Hearing about our offense looking good is great. What about our defense? I want to get excited about our new leaner lineman and new scheme.

Unfortunately Capel was not a red shirt. He had to sit out a year due to transferring from Charlotte. He will have 3 years of eligibility starting next year.mtnjax wrote:

With Kam, Hallock and Lamb, I'd hope we could RS Caruso. Lamb looked like a true FBS caliber recruit on film, and with his resources, father and grandfather, a year with Satterfield, a year in the weight room, I would bet he comes in well schooled and well prepared to be a top 2 QB for us.
I'm really excited about our 2014 defense, and our growing depth and experience.
Our schedule is 100x better than Socon days, the away games are going to be brutal compared to what we're used to, but that will be how we advance the program, head on.

Re: 2014: What are you excited about?
I'm a little late on this, but I figured this might be a good thread to ask:
I've seen a few mentions of players who redshirted or sat out this year whom the staff felt could have potentially helped right away. Can someone clue me on on which players in particular might be expected to play early? I'm guessing Covington might be one.
Thanks for helping out a board newbie.

Covington wasn't redshirted this year, but I think he'll contribute next year moreEastHallApp wrote:I'm a little late on this, but I figured this might be a good thread to ask:

The OL Gossett and Nunn are the 2 they jump out most
Vinson and Wright are 2 LBs that can contribute next year as well

Re: 2014: What are you excited about?
I really like Kam. He is a great kid that came back off and ACL...I have only seen Lamb throw in practice, Hallock is another great kid. But we had an off year primarily due to the play of the quarterback position, (Not the Person because frankly, I think they each gave us the best they have). But if we do not have better play out of this position we are in trouble.GlassOnion wrote:With Kam, Hallock and Lamb, I'd hope we could RS Caruso. We basically passed to run and hardly ever went deep. Now Kam's arm strength might (and has to) get better. We have to be able to stretch the field.
I will say this, after Satt's last season at FIU and the poor quarterback play, I am guessing that he plans on never going into a season without options at this position. ....and we will play the best person for the job, Freshman, RS Freshman, Junior, or whatever....Just because he finished the season as the starter does not mean it is his job by default.....I'd say that NO position is penciled in going into our first season in SB.....(maybe Cox, Law, Townes, Middleton, Gray, Gilchrist, Walton)
Go APPS!

Re: 2014: What are you excited about?
I could easily see Marcus Cox taking some snaps in the slot as a wide-out. Has good hands and runs solid routes plus that could spell him from all of the hits at running back. I believe Upshaw will be a solid back as well as the recruits we have coming in. Wide receiver is our biggest ? on offense next year. We lost Price, Peacock, and Washington this year and will have to replace all that production somehow. Jaquil Capel and Dante Jones could be two names that could take up some of those responsibilities at WR.
Defense we will have Ronald Blair back for two more years which is huge. Hopefully we can get him and Deuce playing well at the same time. We return Law, McGowan, Townes and Gilchrist at LB, as well we have Vinson and Wright that redshirted this year. The secondary returns Ross, Middleton, Walton, Covington, and Gray among others. The big issue will be finding a permanent NT, and consistent play from our secondary. Most of the teams we play next year run the spread and air it out.
It will definitely be fun to watch this team next year. I look forward to this off-season and hopefully finishing strong in recruiting.

Re: 2014: What are you excited about?
To be fair, Kam made big strides by the end of the year, and he ended having the highest completion percentage in school history. He also had a very suspect line blocking for him, and had very little experience thanks to his own injury. I have to believe he will be our starter in Ann Arbor next year unless Lamb, Caruso, or Smith do something incredible in August. Who the starter is come mid-season is anyone's guess though.asutrnr81 wrote: I really like Kam. I'm looking forward to a national ranking
along with a significant increase in App-related media in NC, given the conference move.

Re: 2014: What are you excited about?
Our offensive line gave up 20 sacks this season. That put us 41st in all of FCS. The line also played a significant role in Marcus Cox's 1,000-yard season. While there were times when the line could have played to a higher standard (the QB hurry of Kam Bryant late in the Chattanooga game comes to mind), overall it performed better than some on this board are willing to admit.
