Preach on, 89. Truth be told, we could've come up with the best logo in the history of college trademarks, and deadspin would've found a way to belittle it. That's what folks do nowadays, they get their rocks off on ridicule. More power to them. I'll continue to support this Yosef and his pipe. If they want to add a longrifle and a jug of homebrew, even better.appst89 wrote:I love it! We ARE hillbillies. Re: Logo Changes
Come on 70. If we are still signing recruits after the "Free D'Tae" crap that has been flowing for months across the net (different sport but these kids read all this stuff, including posts that are made on here) then do you really think we're going to loose kids because of a change to a secondary logo? As 89' said, if that makes them change their mind then they didn't want to be here in the first place.GoApps70 wrote:Can see all those recruits just rushing to sign up to play for the App State Hillbillies now.
And BTW, you might want to take a glance to the top of the page. I don't think it will come as a great shock to many recruits or their families who visit here seeing as we have it in the header.

Re: Logo Changes
I can see us disagreeing on this board but damn do we have to take it to the sunbelt board also.
Re: Logo Changes
I didn't like the old logo either, but going to be a lot of criticism coming concerning Hillbilly references.
Just read the 50 or so comments on that one article:
http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketb ... yn-hipster
The other article mentioned wasn't too complimentary also:
http://deadspin.com/appalachian-states- ... 1475021183
Don't mind us competing with other schools, but when another football coach only has to hold up a blowup
of our "vintage" yosef and asks a recruit if they actually want to be a hillbilly that's all it will take for some.

Re: Logo Changes
Two things. If a recruiter can't sell their own program and has to carry a picture of a secondary logo of ours around to sway a recruit to their program then they really don't have much to sell in the first place. Second, if all it takes for a recruit to be turned off of App is, again, a secondary throwback logo, then they weren't serious in the first place.GoApps70 wrote:Don't mind us competing with other schools, but when another football coach only has to hold up a blowup

By this logic recruits who are Christian shouldn't look at Duke (Blue Devils and a devil in the logo) and Wake (Demon in the name). And Chapel Hill. The Tar Hills. Images of barefoot people running through tar pits, plus their mascot is a goat. Won't even go there. We are APPALACHIAN State. The name of the mountain range that is synonymous with the Hatfields and McCoys, moonshine, hillbillies, etc, is in our name. Our mascot used to be a guy dressed up like Daniel Boone (name of the town the university is in) who carried a musket and a moonshine jug. We are the MOUNTAINEERS. If someone looking at us is taken by surprise then I doubt they can get into the school in the first place.
Personally I wish they would have left the name "Vintage Yosef" instead of Victory Yosef. At least the vintage in the title shows that it's a throwback. The biggest mistake the administration made was in the wording of the announcement. It sounded like this was our new logo and not a secondary throwback.
Finally the idiot who wrote the CBS Sports blog thought that we just came up with the name Yosef. Like many bloggers he doesn't know what he is blabbing about and this one really doesn't have a clue about App State or our history. Haters are going to hate. Nothing can change that. I'm not too worried about a few hundred commenters on a national website that has tens of thousands of visitors a day.
Re: Logo Changes
In a bowl game in Charlotte a few years ago Virginia was playing West Virginia.
The Virginia band at half time did a skit on the Hatfields and McCoys. West Virginia fans were irate because they claimed the skit made them look like hillbillys. Virginia apologized.
At least bands can borrow the Virginia bands program and not have to come up with too many new ones.

Re: Logo Changes
I'm not sure where you're going with this, but you mean the former Virginia Pep Band -- a scramble band that was, at times, funny, but mostly predictable and always went for the low-hanging fruit in the subjects at which they picked fun. As a result of that skit, the band was no longer allowed to play at UVA athletics events, and the Cavaliers now have a real marching band.GoApps70 wrote:In a bowl game in Charlotte a few years ago Virginia was playing West Virginia.

Not enthusiastic about some people's endorsement that: "We ARE HILLBILLIES".
Hillbilly Yosef with his corn cob pipe and old bald head may appeal to some of the alums, but doubt the
current and future students will be pleased with it for very long.
Guess we will see soon enough if the faculty endorses working at Hillbilly U when the new chancellor comes. CC may get their support but doubt many faculty or athletes told their mom's that they wanted to be Hillbillies when they grew up. Look forward to the Hootnannys at halftimes though.

What's all the fuss. Isn't the Block A our primary logo? I'd be upset if this was the primary logo.

NO, NO 1000 times NO to a Mrs Yosef. Tried it back in the late 70's and it was a disaster. She looked like the Wendy's girl with a straw hat. Marriage performed on the Duck Pond Field with a bonfire and the whole 9 yards. Lasted about 2 years and she went away, thankfully. It was about as embarrassing as that thing they rolled out for Yosef at Auburn.T-Dog wrote:The white Block A logo doesn't work with the matte black helmets. Also, I would like there to be a Mrs Yosef plus a human mascot named Daniel Boone that wears an open shirt and/or suspenders. Add on long hair and a mountain beard and he would be the Kliff Kingsbury of college mascots.

Wonder why some people choose to pull out and emphasize all the negative stereotypes of mountain culture. Don't place too much stock into some people who show such disdain for the heritage of the school and the region it serves.GoApps70 wrote:Would like to see us go back to the real person Yosef with a long rifle, D. yosef13 wrote:First time posting on the new site. I have to agree with deadspin. The victory yosef looks like a sketch of the one used in the 70's. I was thrilled when they announced that they were bringing back old yosef, but disappointed to see that it was a take on the original. The one from the 70's looks professional. This ones does not. I've heard that the licensing rights to old yosef were purchased by an individual, causing the university to have to recreate. The one from the 70's is only used on on the unis due to the cost to the individual that owns the right. Any word if this is correct or if they are looking to purchase the rights to the old yosef? Sorry if this a dead horse. It's been a while.
It was not purchased by anyone. There were a couple of versions in the 70's. The one from 1970 to 73 is the one being used today as Vintage or Victory Yosef. In 1974 someone in the art department suggested changes to make Yosef look more natural and get rid of the block head look. The collar was changed and tilted to get the head forward instead of sitting up straight. The hat was narrowed and the front brim turned up a bit. The pipe was enlarged. He got a nose job and some subtle changes to the collar, eye and beard. I like the later version better, it looks more natural.

Re: Logo Changes
The way to fight a negative is by owning it. Let see them give out 20,000 corncob pipes to the fans when they come to certain games (I know they wouldn't because it's politically incorrect, so make it hats or beards). Let everyone show up in flannel shirts one game. As the official keeper of the Jug, I would still like to see 20,000 of those at a game.
I've never seen a ECU fans cry when someone makes fun of pirates ARRRRGH? (and their not even at the beach) Yes it is a little hillbilly but it's distinctive. Very few logos are a persons head. Plus we are mountains, we can't hide it, everyone show know it (but maybe Devonte Graham) so the logo isn't telling them recruits something they didn't know. You recruit on your record, coaches, etc not logos.
Other schools are use ASU, Mountaineers and the block "A" we need something that states APPState and nothing does it better than Yosef.
Besides the students have been saying they want the "throw back yosef" for years.
I just wish they had run a contest or something instead one person or one group making a decision, but I never have seen that kind of thought put into anything.

Re: Logo Changes
The return of Vintage Yosef was pretty much made possible by the passion of alums AND current students. The Student Yosef Club shirts feature the logo. They are numerous at the home games. Personally, and purely anecdotal, I've never had a bad reaction when I'm wearing my App State gear, whether it's my Block A hoodie or my Victory Yosef shirt. People like our logos.GoApps70 wrote:Hillbilly Yosef with his corn cob pipe and old bald head may appeal to some of the alums, but doubt the current and future students will be pleased with it for very long.
Nothing about this logo is embarrassing.
What is embarrassing? Your posts here and on the Sun Belt board. Do us all a favor and unplug the computer. Same goes for 95% of the people on AppFan. Christ, I really hate our fan base sometimes.
