It would be great to either creat something that would become a tradition or bring back what we have abandoned. A tradition does not change every year or so. Seems like we have droped everything. Also put me in the group who feels rollneers is very middleschool. We don't need to copy other schools. We are a brand. Do we want to change that to we USED to be a brand?

We had the start of something with "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" for awhile, but then they started playing it at random times when there wasn't enough time for the crowd to get into it. It seems like we self implode every time we stumble onto something, but then we try to force other thing that our brain trust comes up with. Fans have been very vocal about the things they want. Just listen to them!

I do wonder if he reads the board. I would absolutely love (not sarcasm) if I had a place where people openly shared their opinions about my workplace. Maybe he just sees us all as overly whiney.

DG reading social media is one thing. Actually being open to new ideas and taking action on them is another.

As someone limited to TV only for watching the games, my focus would be to ask Gillin to increase the quality of the equipment and watchability. I'm an old(er) head and like hearing DJ and Avery. It's like comfort food. But the wide angles and sometimes blurry picture quality is so noticeable compared to even some other G5s on ESPN+, it takes away from the game in a not insignificant way.

I think this falls more on the Sunbelt. Doug/App has no economic reason to make home games better broadcasts. App/Doug is better off making it so bad that people show up and buy a ticket. That being said, ESPN and the Sunbelt should put standards on each school for the away team to make certain spots in each stadium for cameras. I hate our basketball feed but there is literally no money in it for App to make it better.

Completely disagree. It's 2025, and football is a television sport primarily. And Appalachian has grown to where it's not just a little regional school anymore. There are alumni all over. Many of us in places where deciding to go to a game in Boone isn't an option.

I actually think he sees some folks online as overly whiney. We have some folks who I would love to see how they react if people watched them work and constantly critiqued on their jobs all the time lol

That fits. I always got the impression that he sees fans as a nuisance that must be tolerated. It follows that he’d look at fan feedback as whining.

They probably get a good laugh reading the post game fan surveys they send out.

The first time I ever visited Yosef's Cabin I though some people were overly whiney. This was back when there was still AppFan.com

I don't have this massive ego that I think I need to go up to him and make my opinion known like some. I would never give money just to have my butt kissed or to get inside access to feel special but sadly there are some who do that and it is a pain in the butt for Gillin, coaches, etc. I think there are some fans who are a nuisance he has to tolerate simply because they give money.

It would be a tough balance, because you do want your AD to be open to feedback. But social media a) is not a representative sample of the population and b) highlights the most negative, angry voices disproportionately. So if you're going to use it as a sounding board, you need some method for filtering out the noise and identifying which ideas resonate with the largest portion of your fan base.

Agree with this.

I think that the guy that is always calling for new logos on social media is a great example. Doug and the ADs saw the posts about Flying Yosef and discussed it and tried it. It ended up being a good idea. But the relentless posts asking for more becomes tiresome and off putting. Presenting ideas are probably welcome. The demand for implementation can be counter productive.

I think it should be noted that I think DG is doing a good job, but as someone who worked in college athletics game day experience for a few years, I've got a few:

- removal of on-field in SE corner; blocks view of the endzone, and creates a "we're better than you" feeling for those who are in there (and not even watching/cheering for App)

Huh?
huh?
I didn't know what you meant in the bit that I quoted.

In my opinion he is the best we have had and I know that he works seven days a week , long days . That’s the job. Like the rest of us he has to prioritize where his time and attention goes. I hold him responsible for the coaches , athletes, events and the bank account. He knows that and acknowledges it. I think he does a good job overall.

I look at where we are today compared to the day Gillin took the job and ask: are we better off? On every metric, I come up with a resounding yes. Sure, there are areas of disappointment (elimination of men’s soccer and failure to complete the North End Zone, to name a couple). But every day I’m grateful we have a capable, dedicated leader atop our athletics department.

The funny thing is, most thoughts on here are asking them to do less. Way less. Game day wise, we try too much.
