Re: Logo Changes
To each his own. I'm still in the App Nation no matter what the logo, and I don't think it's the most important thing regarding ASU athletics, BUT the old Yosef is an easy target for anyone that wants to think that ASU is a backwoods unsophisticated mediocre school. Logos/Images have different meanings to different people and the old vintage Yosef that is loved and respected by long-time ASU alums/friends, probably does not convey the same things to an expanding public (isn't that part of why we want to go FBS?) that only marginally know about ASU. If we think the hillbilly Yosef is universally viewed in a positive way by outsiders, we are kidding ourselves.
It wouldn't surprise me if a new Chancellor and a new AD (at some not-too-distant future) decide to move in another direction regarding the Yosef logo. Probably not back to the current "fisherman", but reinventing again to something else.
JMO.

These are just two examples. I didn't include Ohio State, Nebraska, Florida, Georgia, Virginia Tech, etc.
My point is, this is a fad, and it will eventually run its course. I'm not all that concerned with game attire, especially when the game is much more interesting.
As for the white block A, App has used different colors for the block A for years. Check your NC alum license plates...

Important to point out that the idiot on CBS thinks we just came up with the name Yosef. He doesn't know a thing about the history of the school or that Yosef has been our mascot for years. Idiots with computers.

Not enthusiastic about some people's endorsement that: "We ARE HILLBILLIES".
Hillbilly Yosef with his corn cob pipe and old bald head may appeal to some of the alums, but doubt the
current and future students will be pleased with it for very long.
Guess we will see soon enough if the faculty endorses working at Hillbilly U when the new chancellor comes. CC may get their support but doubt many faculty or athletes told their mom's that they wanted to be Hillbillies when they grew up. Look forward to the Hootnannys at halftimes though.

Your dislike for this logo let's us all know that we're on the right track. I support Vintage/Victory Yosef!

Re: Logo Changes
While I agree that we should use a "live" mascot (not a copy of WVU's mascot though), I completely disagree with the idea that students and young alums don't like the vintage Yosef. When App Man first started selling the Yosef Magnets in 2005 we had a ton of positive feedback from students. Our press release even mentions the strong demand from students.GoApps70 wrote:Would like to see us go back to the real person Yosef with a long rifle, D. Boone style.AppinVA wrote:Preach on, 89. Also, who cares what 50 people on a webpage think about our logo? Our fans are the ones buying the merchandise with logo, and as long as the majority of our fans are happy with it that's all that matters. I just don't understand why some people are so uptight over this.

I wore my vintage Yosef hat to a bar in Grand Rapids, Michigan last year. The bouncer asked what logo it was, when I told him he said he was a Michigan fan, but that logo "kicked ass." Nothing about this logo is embarrassing.
What is embarrassing? Your posts here and on the Sun Belt board. Do us all a favor and unplug the computer. Same goes for 95% of the people on AppFan. Christ, I really hate our fan base sometimes.

Re: Logo Changes
So, as a current student here at Appalachian State, I have been asking my friends and classmates what they thought of the logo change. Most of them didn't even know we changed our logo, but once I showed them the before and after, the response was a resounding "I don't like the new logo," the new logo referring to "Victory Yosef." Take that for what it's worth, but though most alumni and some students support the revert back to the 1970s Yosef, I think you will find that many are also not big fans.
As a disclaimer, I am a fan of Victory Yosef. I think he could use some touchups, but I think it was, generally speaking, a good move. I can see the other side of this argument though:
While it is always great to look back at tradition and admire it, each generation needs to be able to make their own traditions. I think many students are feeling raked over the coals and left out of any decision making processes as the loud and proud alumni influence many of the decisions. This is not to say that alumni should bare any of the blame, but I do believe current students are frustrated that the opinions they voice aren't being taken seriously.
Once again, I am a fan of Victory Yosef.
As App State transitions to the FBS, we need to get serious about our branding and establish what we want to see in 10, 20, or 30 years from now. Do I think Victory Yosef will be it? Honestly, no. The block A will likely stick around for a long time to come, but Victory Yosef will hold his own for only so long. What I would be okay with is a modernization of Victory Yosef, to not only be reminiscent of the 1970s version, but to also bring in a 21st century feel.
One artist's rendition of it, which I found on Twitter, is something similar to what could be done. While there are a few things I could pick apart with this logo, like him looking a bit too pirate-y for my taste, I think it is a good direction for us to look.

I think you're giving alumni too much credit. Sales generated this change. Also, don't forget that the Student Yosef Club has been using the "Victory" Yosef logo. Additionally, today's students need to get in line. They had a student vote on the logo in 1999, and IIRC, the logo chosen by the students wasn't what we ended up with. Since then, we've had the Gorton Fisherman logo. Give me Victory Yosef any day.8993 wrote:So, as a current student here at Appalachian State, I have been asking my friends and classmates what they thought of the logo change. Here's the thing: those were the students at Appalachian State in 1999. It is now 14 years later and I'm positive opinions have changed drastically since the 90s. I'm not saying that the alumni is to blame here for anything. I'm just saying that most students would like to see a modern update to Victory Yosef, not something we took out of the 70s and just renamed.ASUMountaineer wrote:I think you're giving alumni too much credit. When I was in Auburn over Christmas last year visiting my girlfriend I wore my hoodie out to the places around town and had numerous people stop and ask me about App and Boone.ASUMountaineer wrote: I wore my vintage Yosef hat to a bar in Grand Rapids, Michigan last year. I support Vintage/Victory Yosef.
My sister lives in NYC, and while hanging around in Manhattan, I was stopped by a couple in Chinatown who spotted my Yosef shirt to talk about App.
Now in St. Louis I ran into a guy who recognized the "Head for the Cool Refreshing Mountains" shirt. I've also run into a couple of folks, with no real affiliation to our school, wearing App shirts as gifts from friends.
Seriously, I've never gotten anything other than good vibes representing my alma mater when it comes to our logos.
I support Vintage/Victory Yosef.
Damn straight.

There are somewhere in the neighhood of 15 ASUs in the United States. There are multiple uses of the Block A by colleges and even the AAC. There is only one Yosef. That is our brand. It is the one unique thing we have to sell Appalachian State. I love the Vintage Yosef and I am ecstatic to see it being used again. That logo has been around well over 40 years already, so I think it will stand the test of time. Having said that, I could see where a slight modernization of the logo could be done. The picture above is okay except for the hat and the collar. As long as it doesn't end up back at the Gorton's Fisherman or, God forbid, Blowsef from the Toot Borkowski era, then it could work.

Anecdotal evience is fine. Some of the people you have spoken to don't like it. But to say it is a fact that a good number of students don't like it, you are going to have to post some data from a statistical sample that corroborates your claim.8993 wrote:That's fine and dandy, but when it comes down to it, a good bit of students aren't a huge fan of the change. Isn't Toot Borkowski responsible for the theft of Yosef's jug...not because he didn't like it, but because he liked it too much?

My two kids @ App have always liked the throwback yosef and all their friends do to. They didn't just change it for no reason. I'll give the AD crap, but no one is that dumb.

Current students helped spur the revival of Vintage/Victory Yosef by using it for the Student Yosef Club. You may have come across several students that don't like the new/old Yosef secondary logo, but the Student Yosef Club shows that there are some students that embrace the new/old Yosef secondary logo.
Again, I'm not debating what students' preferences are, as you pointed out I was in college 14 years ago. However, my post simply stated that in the recent past students' preferences for logos were not considered--this is not a new phenomenon.
As for the rendition in your original post, I know one alum that doesn't like it.
