Logo Changes
Re: Logo Changes
Most of you are missing the point of what people are actually criticizing.
Nobody cares about (or is offended by) the idea of a bearded guy with a hat and pipe.
People are mocking it because it looks bad. It doesn't look bad because it's a picture of a bearded guy wearing a hat and smoking a pipe. It looks bad because it's a BAD picture of a bearded guy wearing a hat and smoking a pipe.
You may like the way it looks. But, that's what people are saying.
It's been popular over the last couple of years as a "throwback" item. NFL teams use throwback jerseys as a reason to sell more merchandise. It works. But, it doesn't mean that Pat Patriot or powder blue uniforms should return permanently.
I'm not against a return to the old school Yosef, but we could have updated it a bit. You could've given the project to a graphic design class. Show them the "Victory Yosef" and tell them to make it better. Choose the best one and you have a better logo and a nice start to student's portfolio.
That might be asking too much, though. We don't even look outside of the County line for head coaches.

To some extent I understand the "don't care what outsiders think" viewpoint. And if this were ONLY about football/sports and our fans, then I'd probably agree. However, one of the most common arguments for having athletic teams, being successful in sports, and moving up to FBS is the "it's the front porch of the university" argument. Folks that are NOT fully familiar with Appalachian State can have their attention grabbed by athletics, be impressed with what they see, seek out more information about the university and thus lead to the long-term growth and greatness of the entire university. In that context, I simply don't see how a backwoods hillbilly logo makes that job easier -- it's not the kiss of death, but it is one more hurdle/stereotype to overcome.

I don't mind that redesign too much. It certainly looks like someone you'd want having your back in a fight!8993 wrote:So, as a current student here at Appalachian State, I have been asking my friends and classmates what they thought of the logo change. Most of them didn't even know we changed our logo, but once I showed them the before and after, the response was a resounding "I don't like the new logo," the new logo referring to "Victory Yosef." Take that for what it's worth, but though most alumni and some students support the revert back to the 1970s Yosef, I think you will find that many are also not big fans.
As a disclaimer, I am a fan of Victory Yosef. I think he could use some touchups, but I think it was, generally speaking, a good move. I can see the other side of this argument though:
While it is always great to look back at tradition and admire it, each generation needs to be able to make their own traditions. I think many students are feeling raked over the coals and left out of any decision making processes as the loud and proud alumni influence many of the decisions. This is not to say that alumni should bare any of the blame, but I do believe current students are frustrated that the opinions they voice aren't being taken seriously.
Once again, I am a fan of Victory Yosef.
As App State transitions to the FBS, we need to get serious about our branding and establish what we want to see in 10, 20, or 30 years from now. Do I think Victory Yosef will be it? Honestly, no. The block A will likely stick around for a long time to come, but Victory Yosef will hold his own for only so long. What I would be okay with is a modernization of Victory Yosef, to not only be reminiscent of the 1970s version, but to also bring in a 21st century feel.
One artist's rendition of it, which I found on Twitter, is something similar to what could be done. While there are a few things I could pick apart with this logo, like him looking a bit too pirate-y for my taste, I think it is a good direction for us to look.
Also I have to say that when I was a student, we had the "Victory Yosef" and I hated it. I thought it was embarrassing and I was delighted to see it go. When it started making it's way back on the scene a couple of years ago, I loved it. Couldn't get my hands on the car magnets fast enough. I now have my favorite App polo featuring it and my favorite cap is of the old school logo also. Funny how time can change perspective.

Re: Logo Changes
This guy gets my point. I'm not saying that "Victory Yosef" is bad in general, I'm saying that what they released is bad. It does look amateurish and I would like to see them update it a little bit, just to make it look as professional as possible, so then we can stick with one logo for more than a decade for once.clayton wrote:Most of you are missing the point of what people are actually criticizing.

Yeah because schools with horrible nicknames like maybe, the ducks or the crimson tide(elephant anyone?), have a hard time getting athletes. It means nothing.

Re: Logo Changes
Can someone explain why we have two old school Yosefs?**
The first Yosef is well drawn with great proportions and an eye that actually resembles a human eye :

Victory Yosef on the other hand is a little emaciated and has a really sorry corn cob pipe. In 3D, his eyes would resemble something like the visor that LeVar Burton wore in Star Trek.

What gives? Victory Yosef doesn't seem to have the character of the other.
**Edit - Must've missed your post Kg. Woops. Thanks for sharing the info. The later Yosef is definitely better.

I think it looks good. To each his own, of course. I'd be interested to see alternatives if someone thinks they could do better. No offense, but I'm not a fan of the version you posted. Re: Logo Changes
Those teams alternates are not "occasional throwbacks," as it were.bcoach wrote:No I take no exception to what you said. As I have said MANY times, I am not talking about the occasional throwback. I am talking about changes like to the helmet Letter from White to black on a permanent basis. But then again I am just killing time. I don't get as emotional about these things as some do. I just think that if you want to establish your "brand" you should be consistent. When you see the Delaware helmet what is the first thing you think about? MICHIGAN and that is because they have established a brand over a very long period of time.ASUMountaineer wrote:I take it you didn't like my post pointing out Michigan, and several others, changing up unis from time-to-time. It's ok, no big deal really. Your sarcasm is noted, but so is the ridiculousness.bcoach wrote:After careful thought I now think we should change uniforms, helmets, and shoes for every game. The opposing team will never know how to prepare for us. Instead of entering out of the gig blowup helmet we could come down a runway. An announcer could tell us who this weeks designer is. I don't think platform cleats will work but how about boots? I think way too much time is spent on xx and oo. Who needs a S&C coach. We need a tailor. Who needs Armanti when we can have Armani. (spelling?)
One more bad thing about not being in the playoffs is this kind of thread starts that much earlier.
I understand what you're saying about brand, but even Michigan has different variations of its logo. Sometimes it's a yellow M with a blue outline. Sometimes it's just a yellow M. They also have a blue M outlined in yellow with "Michigan" across the middle of the logo. I don't see the difference between Michigan using yellow M and blue M logos (using different school colors), and a white block A and a black block A (using different school colors) for App State.

Re: Logo Changes
I was responding to bcoach's assertion of schools like Michigan never change things up. I have no problem with keeping the white block A for everything--it's my favorite logo. However, I don't get the fuss with the "Victory Yosef" secondary logo--it's a secondary logo. I guess you and bcoach take issue with the black Block A. If so, I just don't have strong feelings about that. Most schools have, and use, secondary logos that have inverted colors or a slightly different feature--including Michigan. I don't get the fuss, but I guess that's what makes message boards usable.AppinATL wrote:ASUMountaineer wrote:Hmm...bcoach wrote:I am with you on this. I can live with an alternate uniform for a couple of gamesa season, although I hated this year's version.
Speaking of uniforms, I couldn't even watch Oregon v. OREGON state the other night. It was offensive to the eyes in the worst way.
These are just two examples. I didn't include Ohio State, Nebraska, Florida, Georgia, Virginia Tech, etc.
My point is, this is a fad, and it will eventually run its course. I'm not all that concerned with game attire, especially when the game is much more interesting.
As for the white block A, App has used different colors for the block A for years. Check your NC alum license plates...
I don't think you read my post completely. I said I was OK with the occasional alternate uniform for a game or two a season. What I am talking about is our BRAND. The uniform we should be known by. None of your examples represent a change of uniform for those schools...they are alternates.
And as for the White Block A, it has not changed at all since we first came on the national scene with the three NC's and especially the Michigan win. That white block A was plastered all over the internet and on the cover of Sports Illustrated, not to mention any other publication related to sports. Instant brand recognition. It should not be screwed with 50 years from now, if the bleeding hearts have not gotten football completely outlawed, people should be able to switch on the game and instantly recognize that App State is on the field.
