At the risk of beating a dead horse, on the too many bowls subject, an 8-4 Western Kentucky team that ended the season on a 4 game win streak and beat UK and Navy did not get invited to a bowl. So while you can certainly argue there are too many bowls overall, from the Sun Belt's perspective, it's pretty clear the conference needed some additional tie-ins.

It will improve.

Sun Belt will gain a bowl tie-in with the new Camelia Bowl in Montgomery, AL next year.

And, the Sun Belt may get tie-ins with the Bahamas Bowl and/or the Miami Beach Bowl.

There were 80 teams who qualified for bowl games this year with their being 70 bowl slots. Next year the number of bowl slots increases to 76 or 78 with the addition of a few more bowl games. Starting then almost every team that will be bowl-eligible will be in a bowl. Which will in turn help out the Sun Belt Conference a great deal.

Right, I think it was a mention of those new bowls that got us into this discussion. Sun Belt should definitely be better positioned in the next few years than it is this year. There were actually four other 6-6 SBC teams that also didn't make bowls.

There was an unusually high number of bowl eligible teams this year as well, due to an unusually high number of teams with 3 or less wins. It's not outside the realm of possibility that with 8 new slots next year, there could be more slots than bowl eligible teams next year.

With 8 new FBS teams since the mortiorium was lifted, it stands to reason that more bowls would be needed.

Does your 8 new slots include the additional 2 teams which will be playing in the playoffs and not a bowl game per se ? ---

Though we're supposed to be not eligible for postseason, a lack of bowl eligible teams could, COULD, open the door for us next year, provided we go 7-5, as we couldn't count a second FCS victory toward bowl eligibility. The way I understand it, we could be in line for a bowl if we were otherwise eligible, and there were no more eligible teams to fill any bowl slots. If that doesn't serve as an off-season motivating factor, I don't know what would.

AppinVA,

They changed the rule about counting two FCS schools as wins this past season I believe. You can count any win now as long as it is against D1 competition. That is why there are a lot more bowl eligible teams this season as compared to last.

That's good, but I'm not sure Campbell will count, as it's not a scholarship team. Unless they changed that rule, too, of course.

That bit of news slipped by me. Do you have a link?

Here is the link. I hope it helps because it is kind of a confusing read.

I think a lot of people agree with that. I guess I would just ask, too many for whom?

If you mean there are so many bowls that many of them have lost almost any semblance of prestige, then I'd agree. But who is hurt by them? Fans? If you don't like a bowl, don't watch it.

Players? Seems like for the most part, players enjoy going to even minor bowls, where they get to be treated like celebs for a few days and compete on ESPN (which, for schools like App, certainly is a big deal).

And while pundits and fans may roll their eyes at the Bahamas Bowl, you can't tell me a trip down there in late December/early January to watch App play wouldn't sound pretty good.

So yeah, new bowl games mean more kids who went 6-6 get to go play one more game on TV. But really, what is so terrible about that?
Too many for those who would like to think they mean anything.
I don't watch the vast majority of them.
Have fun in the Bahamas, it will be a nice trip for you and a few hundred fans. That's cool.
BUT if it is only an opportunity to play one more game (we all love one more game) then why not have it at the home of one of the teams and save the university a LOT of money. You would also get a lot more fans to the game. With all this said we are just giving our own opinions on here and mostly killing time till next year.
I'm sorrry, but every other one of your posts talks about money, or how little of it we have. If we are really as bad off as you seem to portray, perhaps we should think about boarding up the whole place.
I understand your exaggeration to make a point. It just so happens that money was a small part of my point. I will continue though to mention money as very few seem to worry about it. I also have never said we have very little money. The fact is that we have a lot of money. Another fact though, is that we have more debt than income produced by the athletic department. I think we should live within our means. I know that is a dying philosophy in this country but I for one still believe in it.
Honestly, can there be too many football games?

If ASU would finish 5-7, I hope they don't get invited to a bowl game. No team with a record < .500% needs to be in a bowl game PERIOD. Sorta like these < .500% high school teams that get in the playoffs. They play the #1 seed and get killed. It's all about the $$$$$$$$$ sometimes.

UT-San Antonio finished 7-5 and is sitting at home. The non-AQ conferences do need more bowls whereas the BCS schools can go jump for all I care.

UTSA was ineligible for bowl games this year. Just like we will be next year.

I read somewhere that they applied for an exemption but it was denied.
