And the next time the BE, or any other BCS league, needs a team, they're going to take one, or all, of those startups ahead of you. The point is that we are way more alike than any of you guys want to admit.

Frankly, I hate smack talk. I think the talking ought to be done by the play on the field.

I hope all of you who come have a great time and are treated well, right up until gametime where I hope you are completely miserable and and leave in disgust around the middle of the 3rd quarter.
I know you're just providing some pre-game smack talk but I do have a serious question for you, since I have talked to many ECU fans who are expecting nothing short of a blowout. Do y'all expect this year's ECU squad to be significantly better than the '09 version or do you feel that App has fallen off a good bit since then? We had a down year in 2011 but then again, so did ECU and unless it has been decided recently, we don't even know who will be starting at QB for ECU in the opener.

I think App will have to execute very, very sharply to pull off the upset but I am expecting a competitive game.
I don't know how I would compare this year's team to the 09 team. Way too tough for me to actually say to be honest. I think this is the best team we will have had since 09. I think there are individual parts of this team that are better than the 09 team, but enough question marks that it's hard to say. My opinion of what happened in 09 against you guys is things came way too easy early, we clearly weren't in very good shape, and very clearly the players and coaches believed the second half was going to go the same as the first. Against a program that expects to win and isn't going to quit that's a huge mistake. I think we are certainly capable of blowing you guys out, but if our QB in his first start goes out there and makes a bunch of mistakes this game will be scary again. Much like our game against South Carolina the next week the upset isn't impossible, but it will take a combination of you guys playing really well and us quite frankly not playing well. Our best beats your best, but if we aren't at our best it will be competitive.

Before you go pulling the Suck Belt card out there are a couple of things you ought to consider. When the ACC was looking to expand where did they go? They took teams from NY and PA when ECU was sitting right in the middle of all things ACC. Why can't you get into the Big East? The same reason why we didn't get into CUSA or the "Suck Belt". All you have to do is look in the mirror to see the answer. You are in the same boat we are in and it's called "Location, Location, Location." ECU has a great program and tradition and so does App. But that doesn't matter one bit to the powers that be of any conference. Personally I feel ECU should have been taken by the Big East long ago and we should have been picked by CUSA over UNCC or ODU but it doesn't matter because we weren't. We both can only do the best with what we have and hope that the PTB's will come to their senses.

As far as the game-Do I think it will be like 09? I doubt it but I don't think it will be like VT last year either. If you were playing us at the end of the season I might feel different but for the first game it's going to be hard on us. New coaching staff for the most part. By SS's own words 60% of the playbook is new and 85% of the field calls are also. It's going to take time for the players to get used to the new system in game conditions. Along with key injuries we have an inexperenced OL and several key pieces missing on D with players moving to positions they haven't played. Hard to take on a team the quality of ECU with those problems but we will play hard and come to win. No reason not to. As I say everytime we play an out of conference and out of division team I hope, for both teams sake, that it's a clean, hard fought game with no injuries that will hurt either team down the road when the games count. Good luck to ECU and I hope you have a successful season, after September 1st, that is. :D

Good points here by moose. Any time a new coaching staff comes in, there is a learning curve and a steep one when you have a younger team. I don't expect a blow out, but I think it will be competitive going into the second half. If App doesn't make the mistakes such as turnovers and penalties, we can pull off the upset. But it is hard to say at this point going into game #1 of the new SS led offense.

I would like to point out a quote from the ECU athletics website "The Mountaineers own a 19-11 lead in a series that dates back to 1932". Nothing else needs to be said. I look forward to the Mountaineers extending the series lead to 20-11 on Sept. 1.

There is always the possibility of an upset happening in the App State-ECU game. :o
However I doubt it will happen. Just not much of a chance.

However if the Pirates can pull an upset against us it will be the high point of their season.

I take it the 09 game is the only one in your lifetime. That was a dominating performance by ECU. I mean in that contest ECU beat little "5A" ASU by 5 points! It sure was lucky for ASU that our starting QB was hurt otherwise it could have really got ugly. It humors me that a team who has an all-time losing record against ASU points out their 5 point win, at home, with ASU starting a backup QB, as some sort of evidence that they are vastly superior. I can't guarantee a win but I will guarantee the Pirates will know they played a football game the evening of Sept. 1

Yeah I'll know we played a football game. Purple Haze will play through the loudspeakers, I'll hear the cannon go off after numerous touchdowns, and I'll see a lot of angry App fans leaving the stadium. So yeah all the signs of a football game and a beatdown will be evident.

b0ndsj0ns:

Heres ECU's last years schedule and this is before you were supposedly rebuilding this year. Lets just take an in depth look at your past season. Against SC your team just flat out got beat up in the 2nd half some say they were over whelmed with Spurriers adjustments and they gave up, it looked to me if SC would have applied themselves and not have 5 turn overs you would have lost by 80 points...Then came the loss to VT,after the game the Hokies say it was a let down on thier part by not taking ECU seriously, then came the terrible win against a 4-7 UAB team, in all reality ECU should have lost this game...then came the beat down by UNC, admins from the ACC say that was a game to prove you guys dont belong in the ACC, since VT couldnt do it...Then came your nightmare, ass beaten against Houston which I enjoyed tremendously, your 53 point loss against a Conference USA team, at least ASU didnt get beat down by thier own comp like that. Then your ECU team rebounds and beats an injury riddled Memphis...Then you go on a winning streak and beat Tulane and Navy argg now that is funny...You then lose to SM which is par for the course for your team, and how about this you guys lose to of all people, UTEP, thats like ASU losing to WCU, and then you guys beat UCF in a Greenville by a TD, then go up to your conference rivals "Marshal" and blow the game by turning the ball over all over the place. You finish the season...5-7 playing against your own competition and miss the Beef's Obradys bowl some where in Florida where only who know how many showed up. Now with that being said, you come here and jeer us for not making it in C-USA and think that ASU will loss by god knows how many points....So be it ASU may lose, but I can tell you this you are in for one rough season, your beat down by SC will be just the beginning. Theres a part of me that wants ECU to do well seeing how 2 of your coaches have close ties with ASU....but then there are fans like you who come into a message board with a team that has 20 more scholarships and just talk trash...Like some one else said ASU-ECU have alot in common, your team cant get into the ACC or Big East and we cant get into C-USA because of market. Well you may never get into the ACC, but you really have nothing to be proud of performance wise based on last years schedule. Your team plays in confernce that just took in UNCC and they havent played a down of football you should be embarrassed. If Ewards would have played in 2009, ECU would have lost. Either way I hope ASU wins so you wont come back to this board. Below is your 2011 schedule if you can stand to look at it.

It is doubtful that he would return. I'm just glad he is here proving that deep down ECU fans know we are their equal. Maybe not in scholarships but in terms of on the field production. Its nice to see the rivalry blossoming.

It is certainly a big game for both team. ECU is a must win for coaches as the next several games will be tough. ASU showing it belongs in CUSA and can play with the Pirates (picked fourth in eastern division of CUSA, new quarterback first game). If you cannot be very close or beat the Pirates this year does it matter if you are better than ODU or UNCC.

I would think this is rebuilding year for ASU but to read the Mountaineer boards I would guess you are favored by 10.

Good Luck to you but I go ECU by 14 maybe, ???

Really? I'm proving I know you are our equal? Ummm no call me when

A. You're an FBS school
B. You can pack 50k fans per game in your little rinky dink stadium
C. You do something that matters aside from winning that 5A HS championship (which you guys can't even do anymore)

Good luck and I certainly plan on being back here after the game is over.

Win or lose and we'll welcome you back. Much to the dismay of both our fanbases, both programs have been passed over for much less deserving programs because of the "market" perception. Unfortunately that's the world we live in and each program must go out an earn their respect. One day ASU will be FBS and I'd like to think ECU will be "BCS" or whatever new moniker they come up with. In the meantime, I'll take solace in knowing that App's rinky dink stadium would have ranked in the middle of the pack of CUSA as far as attendance is concerned. As for the 5A titles, aren't the Pirates several years removed from a conference title and coming off a losing season? Pot meet....nevermind, Terry Williams already sold it!

After careful consideration on the matter, I have decided you are absolutely correct. I can't imagine why I placed a football team with an 11-19 all-time record against ASU as an equal. Here is the thing, not a single fact you mentioned has anything to do with on the field production. 20 extra scholarships and 20k extra fans doesn't mean anything when it comes to the guys that hit the field. Sure added depth helps but only so many players can get in the game. I highly doubt guys 65-85 are going to make a huge difference in the outcome. Sure 50k fans help make for a nice atmosphere but those fans don't win football games. For your last point, when ECU competes for ANY national championship in football, you come back on here and let me know.

The only way to measure two football programs is what they have actually done and whether it was 1932 or 2009 we have beat you 19 time and lost 11 times. The last game in the series was a nail biter and if the ball had bounced our way we would have won. I'm fine with you thinking ECU is the favorite but don't act like we are below you because in the only thing that matters (wins and losses) we have shown we are definitely on par with ECU.

I hope for a clean game Sept. 1 with no injuries and wish ECU the best of luck after that day.

You think the term FBS makes you a "Big Boy"? Why don't you ask Alabama, Auburn, Southern Cal or Notre Dame if they think you are a "Big Boy"! Sounds like you need powder on your diaper.

You had better always be glad that you have 22 more scholarship players, think of how bad your program would get beat without them. You can talk about how wonderful you are, but in order to have someone believe you, you need to tell other Pirates or CUSA members.

If you are taking a date or your wife to the game, you better plan ahead, 'cause ya' ain't getting lucky on the field or afterwards.
