Not sure anyone else mentioned on this thread really sniffs his resume. Here’s to hoping i can will Moton into existence at App like I’ll like to think i did with Drink.Gonzo wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2019 4:42 pmRe: Moton

Before we get into tunnel vision on the same 4-5 names, take some time and look outside your comfort zone at a potential candidate or wishlist coach. Otherwise, people will convince themselves some Alabama OC will be our new head coach without any evidence.

I was told this evening that Lutz “has an interest” .I just listened as it was explained to me why he would be a great pick. I haven’t talked to him in over twenty years (he wanted the job when we hired Buzz the first time , really wanted it ) and don’t know if we have an interest in him. Thinking back to football , it will probably be someone I’ve never heard of , like Drink.

Can someone please tell me why people are so high on moton? He has decent records in a terrible conference. What am I missing? He’s had a couple great seasons, he has a career .576 winning percentage. I’m not trying to be a jerk I’m just curious

Totally agree! Don’t understand it. 18-15 in the MEAC doesnt exactly get the juices flowing or make me excited about the future of App basketball. 3 or 4 trips to NCAA’s for winning MEAC Tourney. The MEAC is terrible.Seattleapp wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2019 10:28 pmCan someone please tell me why people are so high on moton? He has decent records in a terrible conference. What am I missing? Search firms are exceptionally good at uncovering those little known folks. Sometimes they hit it out of the park. Sometimes...not so much. I trust DG to get it right. He knows the track record since the end of the Houston Fancher era is appalling. He certainly knows that a culture of winning must be established. I have high hopes that the turnaround will occur soon enough for App fans in their 60s and 70s to be around to enjoy it. There are a lot of us out here.Stonewall wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2019 8:13 pmI was told this evening that Lutz “has an interest” .I just listened as it was explained to me why he would be a great pick. NOPE, not a relative of Hunter. Reason I don’t think he is a fit is for the reasons ASU66 mentioned.hapapp wrote: ↑Mon Mar 18, 2019 12:59 pmMaybe she knows someone who played there, like a relative? AppinVa knows Tony Shaver because in his days as sportswriter he covered his teams at Hampden-sydney. For what it's worth, the Tigers had some top flight D3 squads.

Totally agree. And Landry has had that success at a very challenging academic school as well. Not easy to get into Swathmore!

Here's a suggestion: Shouldn't we start a thread titled "Men's Basketball Coaching Search" or something? I'd kind of like to see the "Fox Fired" title die.

Re: Fox fired
I just think it’s pretty unfair to say “decent records in a terrible conference”. Did you see what NCCU was up to before Moton arrived? It’s not an easy job and he’s been in the NCAA tourney 3 years in a row and won his regular season conference 2 of the last 4 years. Again, i just don’t know who you think we’ll hire with a more qualified resume than Moton. And I’m not saying there aren’t other hires out there, but I’m not sure I’ve seen anyone mentioned on this thread who is better qualified than Moton. Seems most just have an issue with him being at an HBCU.Seattleapp wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2019 10:28 pmCan someone please tell me why people are so high on moton? Re: Fox fired
Without getting into whether he's the best choice for App, I think these posts undersell what he's done at Central. He took that job right as they were moving up from D2. So first of all, the career winning percentage includes those transitional years. (He's at 64% over the last seven years.) Moreover, yes the MEAC is among the weakest D1 leagues - that's WHY his overall win% isn't great. Pretty much every OOC opponent they play has more resources than they do.appstate24 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2019 10:45 pmTotally agree! His career win% in conference - i.e., against peer schools - is 74%. Three regular season titles (plus a 15-1 second place finish) and four tournament titles. He actually got Central a 14 seed in 2014 - almost unheard of for a MEAC school to be that high.
Record hasn't been as good the last couple years. And yet, they've managed to win the conference tourney both times.
How he'd translate to any other school, or ours in particular, is anyone's guess. But I think he's done a great job at Central.

There's another NC coach in the MEAC that should get attention. Moton gets paid a lot. Jay Joyner has shown to be a heck of a coach, he's young and doesn't get paid like Moton currently. Strike while the iron is hot.

This is why I don't see Moton being a serious candidate. He's being paid $250k and I don't see us offering him much more. He's not going to leave a job at his alma mater where he's built a solid reputation for a rebuild and a similar salary.ClickClackApp wrote: ↑Wed Mar 20, 2019 8:22 amThere's another NC coach in the MEAC that should get attention. I’m really not trying to be the guy grandstanding solely for Moton, but i do know that DG is prepared to go above $250k for salary. That’s not an issue.97APP wrote: ↑Wed Mar 20, 2019 8:38 amThis is why I don't see Moton being a serious candidate. He's being paid $250k and I don't see us offering him much more. Re: Men's Basketball Coaching Search
Thought about Lutz. Charlie Cobb passed over Lutz for Buzz, Buzz left after a year. Cobb made a 2nd mistake of hiring Capel over McMahon. Capel gets fired, Cobb reaches out to Lutz, Lutz rejects Cobb. Cobb hires Fox and leaves for Georgia State. Gillen comes in. Fox gets fired. Lutz may have turned down Cobb, not App necessarily. Perhaps with a real AD, Lutz is open to coming here now. Not sure we want him, but wouldn't hold him turning down Cobb against him.

Lutz's situation is way different now too. When Fox was hired he was associate HC at NC State, not surprised he turned down this job to stay where he was. Now he is unemployed and may have different motivations.NattyBumppo'sRevenge wrote: ↑Wed Mar 20, 2019 8:53 amThought about Lutz. Charlie Cobb passed over Lutz for Buzz, Buzz left after a year. Not advocating for or against him, just pointing out difference between then and now
