Yup, kids wanted him. If it were the current transfer rules, Donald Sims would have transferred. Cobb threw him (and the other senior leaders) under the bus by saying they begged for Capel to be hired. That wasn't the case at all. The begged for Matt but Cobb followed the money the Harrill's threw to get a UNC guy in there (also, the only reason Fancher was fired)

I was not here then, but it sounds like had we moved up then we would not be where we are now. I imagine had we left when Marshall left we would not be where we are now. I bet Jerry Moore would not have taken the job and we would be mediocre at best and no one would care if we won or lost like we do now. Our bad season are considered fantastic season for most schools at any level.NewApp wrote: ↑Mon Apr 11, 2022 3:03 pmMoving at that particular time was a pipe dream. We were barely meeting the minimum number of schoarships to stay in SoCon even. Our stadium wasn't nearly big enough to meet Div I-A minimum requirements. We couldn't raise money worth a crap for scholarships, etc. There are people who would debate this but it was a stretch to say we were ready. ECU wasn't exactly burning up the road their few years until the leg forced NC State and I think UNC to play them and they got all cocky because they upset the big boys a few times. ECU was admitting anyone could walk and chew gum at the same time. They weren't called EZU for nothing.
We have been blessed most of all by not having any scandals that plague so many successful programs. I am sure that after we beat Michigan, everything that Appalachian did was put under an electron microscope.

Re: If you could change App.
I'll buy the Capel hiring as #1 all time bad decision. Extending Fox was more understandable. He was dealing with off-court issues, but no doubt that his on-court performance was a disappointment. Just my opinion but I don't think the decision to remain in the -AA SoCon was a bad one based on the reality of that time. There is no comparison between where we were in 2014 compared with the early 80's. As much as I would have loved to be I-A/FBS earlier, the path we took seems to have been a good one. It's hard to argue with success.

What would you like to see improved/changed going forward?

Yes, yes, and more yes! Crushed by the decision to hire someone with 1 overall years coaching is an understatement. From my understanding, Capel barely had any responsibilities as 3rd assistant coach in the 1 year. The program took a dive off a cliff. Props to Fox for at least improving the academic problems and other issues that came about as a result of the Capel years and developing relationships with alum etc.

Re: If you could change App.
I get what you're saying about local businesses on King St. But I found Alumni Hall on a recent trip up the mountain and it's a great store. Lots of cool gear. I cannot count the number of times I have walked in and out of Mountaineer Mania and Appalachian T's having not found anything I liked. My wife ordered some Auburn shirts online from Alumni Hall because we have niece who is going there in the fall and we're going to wear them to her graduation party. The shirts came separately from two different local stores in or near Auburn. The invoice was placed in an envelope with a handwritten message from the staff, "Go Tigers" and "WDE!!!" Not only was it neat to have the personal messages but it also surprised us that they were picked and shipped from a local store, not a distribution center. I'm looking forward to ordering more App gear online and see what messages come with the order.EastHallApp wrote: ↑Thu Apr 07, 2022 8:10 am- Need a full-service hotel, whether on-campus or off.
- Selfishly (see the username), I wish they would renovate East Hall rather than tear it down. I'm sure some others feel the same about their old dorms, but there is/was just so much funky history there.
- This isn't just a Boone trend, it's a college town trend, but I wish that King Street could remain mostly the domain of local businesses rather than national chains like Alumni Hall and Ben & Jerry's.

Agree 100% on Alumni Hall. I feel like my wife and I have kept them in business we go in every time in town..I purchased my golf bag online from there. Similar to above, there was a note and extra stickers, etc. When we go in person, the customer service has been very friendly as well.goapps93 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 12, 2022 8:45 pmI get what you're saying about local businesses on King St. But I found Alumni Hall on a recent trip up the mountain and it's a great store. Agree. Great store and nice folks. Alumni Hall is Boone’s version of Costco. Can’t leave without buying more than you intended when you walked in.BambooRdApp wrote: ↑Wed Apr 13, 2022 5:48 amAgree 100% on Alumni Hall. Hey, I like Ben & Jerry's too. It's not about hating on those stores. It's about keeping Boone unique and supporting local businesses when possible.goapps93 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 12, 2022 8:45 pmI get what you're saying about local businesses on King St. But I found Alumni Hall on a recent trip up the mountain and it's a great store. Jerry Moore was working at Arkansas for free when he was hired by his old buddy Jim Garner. He would have taken the job.AppWyo wrote: ↑Mon Apr 11, 2022 9:56 pmI was not here then, but it sounds like had we moved up then we would not be where we are now. Re: If you could change App.
Yeah, I get it. I didn't know a thing about Alumni Hall until I saw the one in Boone. My wife informed that they're all over the place. They don't seem to operate like a chain though. The Alumni Hall in Boone is unique in that it only sells App gear. Maybe we can call them quasi-local. I have a tough time supporting local businesses if I can never find anything I want to purchase in their stores.EastHallApp wrote: ↑Sat Apr 16, 2022 10:11 pmHey, I like Ben & Jerry's too. Get rid of the EMC commercials on the scoreboard that show fans at the Tennessee games. I think we could find some footage of App fans.
