Not so fast there my friend....we lost nearly our whole defense..4 to NFL camps...that's got to hurt and it is showing in 3 games this year all but the A&M game. JMU is a good team as they've bolstered themselves with the portal. I hate losing, but we did beat ourselves today after having a big lead. I've been a fan of our Barbay, but today was a tough game for him with JMU's D.

Re: JMU Game Day Thread
Our offense crossed midfield once the entire second half. And when we did we ran the ball predictably on 3rd and 5 then again on 4th and 2 and turned the ball over on downs. That's just pathetic. JMU crowded the box on 1st and 2nd, then when it was obvious passing downs blitzed, because they knew we'd pass off of play action giving them time to get to the QB.
We are a miracle going the other way away from being 1-3, and considering A&M has only beaten an FCS school and a Miami squad that's given up 45 points to MTSU, not so sure even the A&M game will be something to brag about once the season is over.
It feels like we have the coaching staff and players good enough to get us to a bowl game every year, but that's about it. The Sun Belt has improved over the years, and I feel like our progression has stalled or almost become a state of decline in some areas. Maybe Satterfield and Drink benefited from timing of a weaker conference?
Can't put my finger on it, but it's definitely frustrating seeing some of the same issues and not much being fixed. I've learned to separate myself from being as emotionally attached to this program. I do not love the school or program any less, but I'm just not seeing anything over the past couple of years that is worth getting worked up about L's.

Here is what I really don't understand (among many things), if Nate and Chop were able to play, why did we ride with Marshall and Castle? I assumed Cam, Nate and Chop were too dinged to go BUT Nate was in on the play that Chase threw the interception and Chop was in on the next series. If they were available, why are we running our 4th and 5th guys? AND when we clearly could not run, why did we abandon quick passes, tight end passes, running back passes....things that slow a rush and allow the qb to get the ball out quick? Our new OC really impressed me early in the season, now it is like he forgot how to be aggressive. Is this an OC thing or a HC thing? I

You don’t go from aggressive to… whatever we went to without input from the HC.t4pizza wrote: ↑Sat Sep 24, 2022 6:35 pmHere is what I really don't understand (among many things), if Nate and Chop were able to play, why did we ride with Marshall and Castle? But I agree the playcalling was inexcusable that half.

More importantly, we ran on those plays with our 4TH string running back!!!!! It isn't like we gave the ball to Cam or Nate, when the game was on the line it was a 4th string back in control of the game. I am not trying to be down on him, he is a good back, but he is 4ht string for a reason and when you are down that deep on the depth chart perhaps you change the play!

That’s the part that made it so hard. Historically one side would step up and give us a shot, but today in the second have we laid an egg on both sides.WataugaMan wrote: ↑Sat Sep 24, 2022 6:29 pmAnd, the offense scored 0 in that same time.yosef69 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 24, 2022 6:18 pmThe defense gave up 29 points in basically 30 minutesLongrifle28 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 24, 2022 6:17 pmI thought our defense actually played better today. Get used to 89-94, 08-12 Appalachian football. Be happy with the Montgomery bowl and hope both teams have fun.

Some halves you’re the hammer; some halves you’re the nail.
Lots of football left to play. Rest up, heal, and get ready for Marshall, Stink, and Coastal. We’ll need help to win the conference, but we’ve been here before.

Had an effect but can't coach not to lose, drop balls, and turn the ball over. I won't blame the refs for this. This was coaching and poor execution.mountaineerman wrote: ↑Sat Sep 24, 2022 6:13 pmNo probably not but it sure can change the momentum which it did. We are definitely feeling the losses on defense. Just not as lock down as we have been used to. The offense has flashes of being great, but just can’t adjust. Just 1 conference loss so can still win it. JMU will lose one I’m sure. We knew JMU was good, but blowing a 28-3 game is just hard to swallow.

I don’t disagree….lots of hypotheticals. What’s not hypothetical is that the sun belt teams who beat us the last few years have in fact been title contenders and/or winners. The outlier is southern who we all know is a never a givent4pizza wrote: ↑Sat Sep 24, 2022 6:27 pmWe always tend to say that anyone who plays us tight or beats us is a great team and conference title contender. Maybe they are, but perhaps we just played poorly and lost a game we should have won. 3 emotional weeks in a row tends to take a toll on teams.app97 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 24, 2022 6:20 pmWe might have just faced the SB title game participants in consecutive weeks, although I haven’t seen much of Marshall or UL…regardless, we are clearly in a very tough league. The target stays on our back. I hope we find more toughness and resolve as the season progresses.

Just the eye test - they shut us out for 3 quarters. We have too much offense to be shut out by JMU for 3 of 4 quarters. Very little offense in he 2nd half and Chase was "chased" a lot in the 2nd half.

We’re a Hail Mary away from 1-3 and some of y’all are fine with that.
This is how you become a perennial 7-8 win team.

Some are very much content with just becoming bowl eligible and having to depend on some help in order to win the Sun Belt East. They won't admit it, and maybe they don't know it, but anyone that accepts today's performance, those thoughts say differently.

Wonder why we didn't run more screen pass, tunnel screens and quick slants. Maybe some counter plays and draws. Plays that negate a big fast, rush.Black Saturday wrote: ↑Sat Sep 24, 2022 6:32 pmNot so fast there my friend....we lost nearly our whole defense..4 to NFL camps...that's got to hurt and it is showing in 3 games this year all but the A&M game. Didn't see a lot of creativity with the play calling but the defense they played may have taken some of that away. They beat us up pretty good today. Take away the turnover scores and we didn't do all that much. We may be a little young on D, but outside of receiver, our O may be the most experienced we've ever had.
