Re: Not the way to start...
To be fair, through 5.5 series (3 for App, 2+ for GaSt), things looked really bleak. We weren’t moving the ball well and our coaches weren’t showing signs of making adjustments yet, and GaSt was cramming it down our throats like we were Linda Lovelace, so the reactions were at least a little warranted. It looked a lot like another TxSt game. Penalties, dropped passes, poor tackling…
That said, we cleaned it up and played like we, as fans, expect the team to play every week. Coaches made adjustments, players showed some heart and grit, and we won. There’s still a lot of learning to do, but maybe this is a turning point. We won’t know anything after next week, but in 2.5 weeks we will.
Give 'em hell!

The 5 Stages of App State Football Game Threads:
Cautious Pessimism
Furor
Cautious Optimism
Elation
Reasons we aren't good even though we beat the spread by 16 points
Also the 5 stages of me at the game minus the last point, because I still have no clue if we're good or not. To me, IF Cam can stay healthy, we go 9-3. If Cam is gimpy at all in any game, 7-5. After last night, I realized he's that much of a game changer.

Re: Not the way to start...
Yeah, we didn't cross the 50 yard line until 2nd quarter. Def got our sh together in the 2nd half, but we need to see a consistent upward trend before we start throwing ice on a few of these hot seats. We've played 2 consecutive qrts of good football a few times this year followed up by abysmal play. Add in the poor clock management at the half, there is plenty to criticize but have hope for the rest of the season.yosef69 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 20, 2022 7:44 amNah man. We sucked that quarter. If you BOO our young men or the coaching staff, it is NEGATIVE plain and simple. Same with some of the you, you know who you are, who are negative constantly on YC. The Power of Positivity is an amazing thing! Be a energy giver, not an energy vampire. What recruit, former player, recruit family wants to hear OUR fans or those that claim to be App State fans booing. The majority have no clue the depths of game prep. Heck, someone the last game booed when we went for it on a 4th down early and booed exactly for the same situation except reversed tonight when we elected to punt it at about the same field position. Some are spoiled fans, some are delusional, and others are just plain ignorant. If you want to boo, keep your butts at DCU. (Da Couch University)
So what we had a slow start, football is about 4 quarters! Kuddos to all involved last night the win...from the HC to those scanning tickets to those working directing traffic! You ARE valued and appreciated!!!!

It's ok to be positive, but there is nothing wrong with showing your displeasure for lack of performance in sports. It is "sport". I'm not one to boo my own team, but I will absolutely be pissed. Amateur athletics is over and done with by the time they hit College. If these young men and coaches can't handle adversity and criticism, they probably don't have the right mentality to be successful in sports. They all lobbied to get paid, well now they are, and performance is required. I've coached AAU basketball and youth football for a long time and I prepare each kid for adversity so they tune out the parents, opposition, and anyone else besides their teammates and coaches. The ones with the best resolve are the ones who perform best under pressure, show the most consistency, and organically lead their teammates in and off the field/court.appgrad2010 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 20, 2022 8:32 amIf you BOO our young men or the coaching staff, it is NEGATIVE plain and simple. No offense to you, because I think being a positive fan is awesome and has its place, but College football is a performance business now with the transfer portal, the NIL, media contracts etc.

Re: Not the way to start...
Proud of the defense, after the 14-0 start for GaSt the defense pulled together and got stops on 10 of the final 11 possessions of the game. It was 7 consecutive stops until the early 4th quarter field goal by GaSt.
The 4 straight stops to end the half was huge, gave the offense and chance and in the second half the offense came through. Being down 21-7,24-7,32-7 at halftime etc could have been fatal (see Tex St) and would not have allowed us to run the ball the way we did in the second half.
Despite injuries and depth issues they really set us up to win the game

Re: Not the way to start...
The only boo's I heard was on the first 4th and 1 punt at near midfield. Didn't notice it any other times on TV. What I saw starting the game was a nervous team and coaches trying to find our footing. The early time outs were to try and get everyone in focus. I guess in the long run that worked. Those guys really needed the rest of the game after the 1st quarter to build confidence and grow as a team. Listening to Clark post-game they made several changes, o-line he specifically mentioned and those changes definitely showed last night. I liked what I saw last 3 quarters. Passing game struggled but I think that will work out. Hopefully we are back right going forward on offense. I think the rest of the conference play has better pass play on offense and we could struggle on that. Came close to giving up some big ones last night and multiple PI calls. I feel much better that we can and will finish the season competitive. Let's hope the good guys win out.

Re: Not the way to start...
The fact you heard anyone booing at all on tv is a problem. What do recruits think when they hear that?
The second timeout was due to someone being out of alignment on the field or not knowing what was going on. Clark was ticked he had to take a TO and frustratingly throw his head set off to show that.
Thoughts on the officiating:
Really suspect lack of holding calls on GA State at least 7 times last night....officials in general seem to miss many holds. Sitting at a different vantage point, two blatant face mask calls that should have gone our way went called as well. In addition to the off setting unsportsmanlike calls which was a loud of steaming cow dung. Our player stood their near their guy on the ground and their player literally stands up and scoop slammed our guy....only thing possibly missed was if our player said something and the official heard it. GA State definitely with some extra curriculars after the whistle, but I really wish some of our guys would maintain better composure as the lack of self-discipline by a few is frustrating.

Re: Not the way to start...
The 1000 yard streak is not an individual stat, it is an indication of a program of consistency running the ball and something that our team should take pride in. Doesn't matter who gets it, as long as someone does because it is a harbinger of success for us. When we have a 1000 yard back, the season is usually a good one. I am sure it is not a team goal at all, as winning the conference and a bowl are but I am equally sure the offensive line take great pride that for the past 10 years we are the only school in the NCAA FBS division that has been able to produce a 1000 yard back. I don't think Clark thinks of it at all nor should he. But, I am not Clark, I am a fan who wants to see Cam get his 1000+ yards because he is by far our best back and when he is in the game, good things happen for App. Hell, even the broadcasters realized that last night and it didn't take them long. Murray remarked about how different our team is when Cam is in the game and on the field. So yes, I want him to get his 100 next week and sit for the next 3 quarters while others get their shot.

Re: Not the way to start...
Personally, not worried about passing game. Passing game has been the reason we kept some games as close as we were (UNC, tx. St., etc). If we can continue to run the ball and pass as in the past games this year. (maybe quality, not quantity)..things are looking positive. If we had a top 20 defense, I would not care how we score. However, our D could use rest given thin with injuries. We tried to adapt and modified game plan. Glad it worked and hope we continue to evolve. Moving people around on OL and/or inserting new people on OL can be difficult. They have to work in concert with each other. Very proud of the guys.

Re: Not the way to start...
We have multiple capable backs. I would be fine with losing the 1,000 yard rusher streak and replace it with a conference championship and bowl game win. Let Cam and Nate rest against Robert Morris and have them as close to 100% as possible for the Coastal, Marshall, ODU, GSU gauntlet that will actually impact the results of our season, not just a meaningless statt4pizza wrote: ↑Thu Oct 20, 2022 10:01 amThe 1000 yard streak is not an individual stat, it is an indication of a program of consistency running the ball and something that our team should take pride in. And to add...if we do not have a 1000 yard rusher, the killjoys on this forum would add that to the list of things happening or not happening at App. St.t4pizza wrote: ↑Thu Oct 20, 2022 10:01 amThe 1000 yard streak is not an individual stat, it is an indication of a program of consistency running the ball and something that our team should take pride in. I would much rather win a conference title also, I just happen to believe that our best way to do that is to ride Cam, and if we do he will get his yards. Our offense just moves better when he is in the game, and anyone who doubts that just go back and look at our loses. We are not just going to not play our starters, nobody does that (just watch any SEC against FCS team and see if the starters don't play) . We will play them most of the first half and have our backups in after that.

I applauded the punt on our first drive on 4th and 1 on our 40, just as I criticized the decision to go for it last week.
This is situational decision making. The first five minutes of the game isn't the time to take risks when you are the perceived favorite.
