The year was 2004. The decision was made to go to a new wide open offense and to start four young DBs in hopes they would develop into something. No one knew for certain what would happen, but the decision was made and carried through.
The rest is history. The Spread put us on the map. Those four young men have names like Lynch, Wozeah, Touchstone, etc. That first year for the team was Hell on Wheels including a serious butt kicking at Wyoming. However now we know what they accomplished including the NC rings and SoCon rings. Their first tough year made them ready for what was to come.
Fast Forward to 2013. A young defensive secondary, young linebacking corp, new RB's, wounded and not ready to play QB enter their first game under a new coaching staff, with an announced movement to the highest level of college football. They played their first game in a place that, until 20 years ago, would have been flagged most every play for excessive noise.(For you youngsters, that used to be a penalty!) This brand new version Mountaineer team got their backsides handed to them.
My question is, in four years where will this team be? What Bowl games or SB rings will they earn. What will the gauntlet they will run this year make them ready to do in, say 2015-16? I say a lot.
I do not give up on this year. I still see 8-9 wins are possible--(losses to UGA, Stink or Woffie in addition to Montana.) The 04 team managed to win 6 games I recall.
However I am looking at what these 18-22 year olds are learning about life through football and how resilient they will become against FBS competition and how in time we will look back on them with pride as young men and as a football team that took us to the FBS level.
I shall be in my seats this Saturday and after Saturday night, I STILL bought tickets for the next home game I can get to as I work on weekends. I am also planning to attend games against The Citadel, Woffie, and Vermin on the road.
GO APPS!!! BEAT A+T!!!!!!!!!!
