Re: Home Season Moving Forward
I once heard a discussion about a person’s life and people in general using the example of concentric circles and how they overlap often influences one’s feelings and perspectives. People in California are aware of the tragedy and circumstances folks in western Carolina are going through but for a majority they are pretty removed so very few of their own circle overlaps. Same goes for most people in NC when a major earthquake hits that area even if there is a large loss of life. When major events happen across the globe like wars or earthquakes or storms take huge numbers of people we feel bad here but generally move on with games and life which is the way it is. In this case the circle is overlapping more people than normal and the football game small circle which is vitally important for many overlaps the western NC hurricane dead people buried in mudslides and the western NC people cut off by broken roads and the NC people without power and water circles. It will be a long time before the negative effects of those overlaps are not felt. To say not to play games in a few weeks is a tough call and life must go on but I’m glad I don’t have to make that call.

Re: Home Season Moving Forward
You are correct and there are a lot more responsibilities as you noted. As much as I would like a home game in Boone, it just can't happen. Most of those people working on those topics above are working a minimum of 12hr shifts. The correction officers were working 32hr shift at the two prisons. Those helping are working their butts off and many many hours. They don't need us (fans) in Boone right now. I so agree with you.Bootsy wrote: ↑Sun Oct 06, 2024 3:50 pmTo Stonewall’s point, a significant number of governmental employees are required for football games to happen at KBS on any given Saturday. 100% of them are working crazy shifts right now
- managing traffic flow
- conducting well checks on residents
- searching for missing persons
- Notifying family members of missing individuals who have been found (living or not)
- investigating complaints/reports from citizens
- maintaining order at supply depots
- erecting/removing barricades
- repairing infrastructure
- treating & transporting the sick/injured
- speaking with/managing local, state & national media
And a wide variety of other tasks and responsibilities not listed here. So, football games at KBS aren’t in the cards for the foreseeable future.
- liaising with NGOs involved with relief & recovery efforts

Re: Home Season Moving Forward
First test will be this week on the update on classes that is supposed to come by Wed. That will show how "back to normal" we are able to get for classes. I'm wondering if some may go back into the classrooms on the 16th and others (with damage to the buildings) go to online the rest of the semester.
Basketball has to be thought of soon with water/clean up in Holmes.

Glad we renovated the rec center next to the stadium. Basketball teams can use that to practice.biggie wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2024 8:28 amFirst test will be this week on the update on classes that is supposed to come by Wed. Baseball is returning to practice soon, those kids came back to campus this week.
Wouldn’t surprise me if we went online the rest of the semester.

To pull off a game requires more than App people. I'm not saying its impossible but the wider community plays a role in making a game possible.Appst86 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2024 6:55 amThere are people employed by the university that have the responsibility of ensuring home games happen. A ticket office employee or an Athletic Director will be of little value to the electric company in getting the lights back on. I'm sure there are folks that are working non-stop to ensure facilities are ready to resume classes as well. More than one thing can and must happen at a the same time. Just because someone is not directly involved in disaster relief does not mean there is a lack of caring.

I'm just not sure they can use Holmes for games, cleaning up and making sure there isn't any mold before games start.311neers wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2024 8:58 amGlad we renovated the rec center next to the stadium. Wouldn't surprise me to be online, but there are a good amount of classroom buildings without any damage. Not sure how the rest of the campus has cleaned up so far though either.

I don't disagree with you. At some point, university and local officials will determine if it is possible/safe to proceed. My point is people have to work their lane until a decision is made.hapapp wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2024 9:06 amTo pull off a game requires more than App people. Re: Home Season Moving Forward
Any word on classes resuming? I think best case is remote with in person classes left up to the discretion of the professors and student.
With ~ 6000 faculty / staff employed by App State and ~15,000 off campus students, I don't see how a full return to in person classes will happen until Spring 2025 or more than likely Fall 2025.

Will a mifi device work? Not sure how close you need a network to be to use one. I honestly don’t know. I'm not sure what any of that is or how it works. I can and will go to campus. I was thinking more about students.BambooRdApp wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2024 1:41 pmWill a mifi device work? Not sure how close you need a network to be to use one. Honestly not trying to be pedantic, but is your Wi-Fi out or is your Internet access out? For context, WiFi would be local "wireless" access to the devices at home, "Internet" access would be access past your home, to the outside world (Google, appstate, edu, etc..)
As long as you have power, your home WiFi should be ok. Your Internet would likely rely on a CoAx or fiber running to your house.

Re: Home Season Moving Forward
They haven't said anything about cancelling online only classes so far. Mine is still going forward as far as I know.
I'm not sure those that are in the class that are in the Boone area, or other areas affected by the power/internet outage, had any issues. I know at least 3-4 in my current class would normally be in Boone still as there a couple that play sports and one works in Boone.
Wished the professor would have sent something to clarify some.

There is not much your professors can say. It is all up in the air. The administration, from the Chancellor down to department chairs are doing well. Really well in my opinion. But I have nothing to say to my students and I can't get on to AsULearn anyway. I'm sorry for this.biggie wrote: ↑Mon Oct 07, 2024 2:39 pmThey haven't said anything about cancelling online only classes so far. Mine is still going forward as far as I know.

Re: Home Season Moving Forward
My gut feeling is they'll announce the plan for Oct. 26 and Nov. 2 home games this week or weekend at the latest.
Next Monday is when TV designations for Oct. 26 are announced 12 days out. I would imagine TV would like a firm answer where the game will be and it's best for logistics if that's done before too much longer.
