Re: Rays potentially moving to raleigh/carter Finley complex
Charlotte doesn't seem to be pushing for MLB while other cities are...not shocked. Wish city and gov't officials would push for it. Carolina's have too much baseball history, population growth, young families...etc to not be represented by a team. (Yes, that's been the Braves for years) Time to have our own team.
Not to mention the baseball talent in the Carolina's is some of the top in the nation.

If there is/was room, the Bowl would be perfect. I know that they are building more office buildings there which equates to corporate dollars and the light rail will eventually reach the area. It would be a great area for a park.311neers wrote: ↑Fri Apr 04, 2025 8:45 amThere probably was enough room a couple of years ago, maybe not anymore as it's picked up a lot of development traction. You're absolutely correct though, The Bowl in Ballantyne could have been Charlottes version of the Braves "Battery area". They've gotten rid of Knights Castle in Fort Mill and The Hive off Tyvola. The Hive was perfect! Or maybe I enjoyed it because we were actually good in the 90's/2000's and didn't know any different. Maybe you re-develop the Brookhill Neighborhood in Southend (Remount/I77) with the stadium, mixed-use retail, multi-family (affordable component), parking, light rail access, access to 77.
That would be a feat.
Maybe scrape Memorial Stadium and re-do that for baseball?

Charlotte city officials have been behind the curve for several years. They are barely planning for the bare necessities right now, including water, transportation and shelter. They are struggling at these things. If we want a team in the Carolina’s, the South Raleigh area may be more equipped.311neers wrote: ↑Fri Apr 04, 2025 8:47 amCharlotte doesn't seem to be pushing for MLB while other cities are...not shocked. Re: Rays potentially moving to raleigh/carter Finley complex
they are doing it in phases and they currently aren't adding any office buildings in this phase. I think they'd scrap some office buildings in a heartbeat if MLB was an option. The only space I think can fit an MLB sized stadium is between Lower Ave and Ballantyne Commons though. The City would have to commit to bringing lightrail before opening (its already on the 2030 plan). I'd be pumped. I don't think Don Beaver owns truist field uptown though. Hes probably SOL on selling the knights if he can't turn into a minority owner of the franchise though.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 04, 2025 8:56 amIf there is/was room, the Bowl would be perfect. Thanks for the update. Was told my company was getting office space but it was going to take a couple of years. The assumption was that they were looking to build and the Bowl is the rumor.BallantyneApp wrote: ↑Fri Apr 04, 2025 9:46 amthey are doing it in phases and they currently aren't adding any office buildings in this phase. Re: Rays potentially moving to raleigh/carter Finley complex
Raleigh does have the potential development plan in place with the Downtown South concept from back when they were bidding for an MLS team (which Charlotte ultimately beat them out for). I will say the lack of any sort of metro rail service in the Triangle sucks, and would definitely make getting to and from a downtown stadium a hassle. But the city does have the space for a stadium.ASUFan4863 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 04, 2025 9:42 amCharlotte city officials have been behind the curve for several years. My sense is that having Dundon now fully involved in the effort is a game changer. Prior to that, I think Raleigh was more on the fringes of the MLB discussion. We have the population and (IMO) the interest for it, but the question was always "where is the corporate money going to come from?" From what I've heard, Dundon is pretty all-in on pursuing an MLB team (along with obviously developing the area around the Lenovo Center, despite those apparently being separate projects).
This discussion inevitably gets into some Raleigh-Charlotte rivalry territory. I can't be objective there because there are few things higher on my Raleigh wishlist than bringing MLB here. Hope it happens for NC one way or the other, though.

Re: Rays potentially moving to raleigh/carter Finley complex
Listen....The whole idea of baseball in Raleigh is rediculous. First off the most notable minor league team in all of sports is just down the road and they don't sell out every night. Secondly, Raleigh and all the required parties won't get their act together and be on the same page to get a stadium built anywhere in Wake County...
How do I know?...Well if NC State had their act together they would have built a purpose built baskeball arena on Centinial campus years ago, the MLS would have chosen Raleigh and any other countless worthwile projects would have come to fruition i.e the light rail system, the Dorthia Dix park would be used for something other than late night teen cruising and the Hurricanes would have a stadium near downtown where everything actually happens.
Raleigh doesn't want nice things, never has, never will. Raleigh wants to be a medium size fish and a small pond.

Re: Rays potentially moving to raleigh/carter Finley complex
NC State money not being able to do something is not the same as a Private professional league team owner trying to do something. Raleigh absolutely could support an MLB team. It's not ridiculous at all. They support an NHL team for crying out loud. Comparing to minor league is also bad. People don't have the emotional attachment and tradition with minor league teams like MLB teams.kornegaylw wrote: ↑Fri Apr 04, 2025 12:50 pmListen....The whole idea of baseball in Raleigh is rediculous. The Hive was a better arena for basketball and concerts than Spectrum. But, the banks wanted the arena uptown.311neers wrote: ↑Fri Apr 04, 2025 8:45 amThere probably was enough room a couple of years ago, maybe not anymore as it's picked up a lot of development traction. The AAA Park was delayed downtown for several years, because a local attorney kept suing for a MLB stadium vs. the smaller one that the Knights built. https://www.wrhi.com/2013/01/charlotte- ... park-74654

Re: Rays potentially moving to raleigh/carter Finley complex
Well having lived there has nothing to do with having information about there so that's kind of irrelevant. A chunk of my family graduated from NC state over the decades and some still live there including one who is a director at a real-estate firm that has had actual insight on some of these projects. A close friend was involved in local politics for a long time before moving to Gardner. Those are just a few of the informed connections. But you're right. I don't live there so I must know nothing.kornegaylw wrote: ↑Fri Apr 04, 2025 7:11 pmDaze have ever lived in the Triangle?appdaze wrote: ↑Fri Apr 04, 2025 4:23 pmNC State money not being able to do something is not the same as a Private professional league team owner trying to do something. By that logic, you don't live in Boone so you can't have an informed opinion about anything App State.

Re: Rays potentially moving to raleigh/carter Finley complex
It's unlikely they move to Raleigh but it's not a complete joke. I live in Rays country. They want to move to Tampa but St. Pete won't let them. The latest stadium deal fell through. Discussion of moves to Tampa have been shut down by the St Pete board. They can block the move to Tampa but thinking is maybe not out of the area. Orlando, Charlotte, Nashville and Raleigh have all come up in discussion. The Rays want to move to Tampa because a larger chunk of the population can get to the games easier. Attendance in St Pete has always been lower than desired because it is a trek for most of the fan base. Current thinking is they will go back to the Trop after it is repaired and wait it out.
Most likely they eventually move to a new ball park near the waterfront in Tampa or the fairgrounds area or out of the area. The Ray's are playing outdoors in Tampa at the Yankees spring training park and selling out every game. Granted the place only hold 10-11K but selling out. The Ray's play competitive baseball on one of the lowest budgets in baseball. They excel in developing talent. If they had close to the budget of the Yankees, they could dominate baseball. As it is, their best talent goes elsewhere to cash in.

Never understood the location is a trek argument. I lived in Bradenton and getting there wasn’t difficult. And yes, I used to work at the Bucs training facility when it was a mall and I was able to go from work to home and back to the Trop in time for a game.Apptiger wrote: ↑Sat Apr 05, 2025 11:19 amIt's unlikely they move to Raleigh but it's not a complete joke. To me the ideal place to have put the stadium was on the grounds of the St Pete dog track. Still in Pinellas County but easier access from Tampa across either the Howard Franklin or Gandy Blvd.

Won't disagree on the dog track location. Think it would have been a good or much better spot. With the current site people coming from the eastern, and northern parts of Hillsborough, New Tampa, Wesley Chapel and Plant City, Lakeland areas don't get home until almost midnight after a game and traffic has gotten so bad going over if you don't head out by 3-3:30 pm odds you miss the first inning or two are pretty high on some days. My last game I left Lakeland at 4 pm for a 7pm game time and missed the first two innings and got home at 11:55. That was 3-4 years ago and traffic has only gotten worse since then. I just watch on TV.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 05, 2025 11:30 amNever understood the location is a trek argument. I lived in Bradenton and getting there wasn’t difficult. seems to me that if 3 or 4 teams claim you're in their market, you're not really in a specific market.

Re: Rays potentially moving to raleigh/carter Finley complex
NC State gets a sweet deal with the Lenovo Center, and especially the new development around it. Why would they bother raising whatever ungodly sum it would cost to build an on-campus arena when they can just ride the Canes' coattails in the current one?appdaze wrote: ↑Fri Apr 04, 2025 4:23 pmNC State money not being able to do something is not the same as a Private professional league team owner trying to do something.
