I don't totally disagree with you. However; and not that it really matters in the whole scheme of things but for correction on your comment; I financially support App through both the Yosef club and with football season tickets. I haven't given 1 dime to UNC basketball, football or any other sport when it comes to tickets, funding or anything really. So to say I don't put App 1st just because I don't buy the "UNC wants to destroy App by keeping away funds" is very false. You'll find me wearing my Black & Gold Saturday in Keenan if you're there.

I do find it discouragement that App has some of the lowest funding in the State and would love to find out the true reasoning App receives less. And not just less than UNC, but Wilmington, Greensboro, Charlotte and others. But whether there are App fans who turn on their TVs to watch ACC basketball or not isn't going to change this at all. I just find it a stretch to believe that App receives the least amount of funding solely because "UNC is trying it's best to keep App down and prevent it from becoming a football power". A stretch unless you are just really wanting to find a justifiable reason for your already developed hate.
We do not have “some” of the lowest funding per student in the UNC System. We have the LOWEST and have for many years. What I have recently learned is that it stems from a decades old “pooling” that occurred within the UNC System/Legislature whereby all state universities were split into 3 Tiers. We fell into the lowest tier and are associated with the likes of WCU & Pembroke.

State, CH, ECU, Science & Math are the top tier.

Our leaders are fighting and have been fighting for over 20 years to have the tiers reassessed so that at a minimum we will be on par with the unc-G & UNCW.

Just $2k more per student is an additional $40M in annual funding for App and puts us on “equal” footing annually with G and dub on a per student basis.
This string has been very enlightening. I was completely unaware how disadvantaged our University is compared to in-state peer institutions with regard to state funding. I don't think winning football games will change anything in Raleigh unless fans gained also have connections with the Governor, House and Senate leaders. Let's talk turkey here; who do we start contacting in Raleigh to get this reassessment on the docket? I can promise you, in politics, the squeaky wheel does indeed get the grease. Or in our case, the money.

On another note, my father went to Carolina and before going to App I pulled for everything UNC. While there I pulled for UNC to win the National Championship in BB as I pulled for NC State to win the next year. As an App graduate, my blood runs Black and Gold and I want us to beat the pants off of anyone we play but particularly in-state schools. I can't wait for Saturday and fully expect our boys will be victorious and I hope it's by a WIDE margin. Regardless, on Sunday, I'll be wearing my App gear around town as usual. If it comes out the way I think, I'll just have a little bigger smile on my face.
When were the tiers decided??? I can see where 40-50 years ago, App would be in that lower tier with Western and P. However, it is definitely time for an adjustment to give App more funding as we have out grown that tier and need to at least be on the same level as UNCG & W. Does sound like this is a political issue that can be addressed. Whether or not the blame goes to Chapel Hill is still up for debate. Either way, App needs this win Saturday in a big way for the football program and athletic department and hope they can pull it out.
40-50 years may not be out of the realm of possibility.

My understanding is that it was well before my time at App which started in ‘99. We had some very influential folks involved with BOG during the early/mid 2000’s including the Peacock years and the boulder was unable to be budged.

I'm bumping this thread "back" to the football "side" of split loyalties for a sec. Just watched a clip of UNC frosh QB Sam Howell meeting the press as part of the mid-week pre-game festivities prior to our game in Chapelboro on Saturday afternoon. Howell was asked by Brant Wilkerson-New if he had any friends on the App State team. He replied that his very best friend in life, OL Luke Burnette (out for the season with an injury), was just one of several Mountaineers that he knows. He said their fathers were best friends starting during their days as students at App State. Sam and Luke have been close buds since diaper days. But there's more...not only did Howell's dad matriculate to App--so did his mom...and his sister...and his brother. Mountaineers all--with a lone exception!

I don't even want to know who's wearing what color this weekend! Sam Howell's the odd man out in this Monroe, NC clan. I just want him to be the QB of the losing team on Sat. evening. May Saturday night in Carmichael, E-house, Ram Village, Olde Campus, Upper and Lower Quad, Kenan and all along Franklin Street be exceptionally sober and quiet!
Proud triple-degree App grad--Classes of '66, '70 and '81.
If it happens to the Apps, it happens to me!

Thanks Chuck, I did not realize that. His dad goes by nickname "Duke". He was a state champion wrestler, do not know whether he wrestled at App. I believe he is also related to NC Hall of Fame coach Babe Howell.

His dad is currently a probation officer in Mecklenburg County.

My buddy went to Sun Valley and still lives nearby, so he follows the team. He told me years ago about Sam and mentioned how he always said he wanted to play for Appalachian. Obviously, he became a “household name” in the state and started getting poached by the bigger name schools. Bigger in name, not in skill.

Everybody that grew up in NC had a favorite ACC basketball team. So naturally some graduates of other NC schools may be a fan of some NC ACC basketball program. I don't understand all the fuss.

I highlighted the key words. I know I’m generalizing here, but it seems fans of the other schools, in large part, have moved on, and CHeat fans have not.

Born and raised in NC. Screw the ACC and their stuck up fans. Tobacco Road is full of potholes and driven by bow-tie wearing pricks. Give me the Mountaineers in any sport.

I cannot wrap my head around the idea that someone can attend App and then cheer for another school.

Like I can maybe get it if you went to graduate school somewhere else, but damn...it’s App State or death for me, Patrick Henry style.
I went to App for undergrad and then Miami for grad school. When they played I was all black and gold. My wife on the other hand loved living in Miami and had an App shirt and Miami earrings.
I graduated from Charlotte, but the only trouble that I had two weeks ago was that they put 40+ on my APPS! I used to walk to the Apps games when I was 6 and 7 years old...before Conrad Stadium was built. Over the years I sat in more than my share of “white-out” games: those where you could hardly see the game for the wind-blown snow: not because everyone wore white App St jerseys. No issues whatsoever! My heart belongs to the Black and Gold!

There’s really only meaningful question about split loyalties among App Nation: Los or Dos?

I am blessed ... I am a Mountaineer squared.

06 and then grad school in 13.

I grew up a Hole but when I went to App my closet became Black and Gold. You could say I finally opened my eyes. I love my school and am fortunate enough to have earned both my degrees from the place I love!

This sounds like something that can’t be true.

Went there after the Charlotte game. It was better. I was shocked.

I'm a Los guy, although I can drink Margaritas from anywhere (better be strong), and I'll pretty much eat anything wrapped in a tortilla. I'll have to check out the new joint.

The sucky part is my wife doesn't like Mexican, so I never get to go to any in Boone when she's with me. Usually just Black Cat and Peppers.

Same here. $5 margaritas or $5 32oz Dos Equis, bowl of hot salsa, and pretty much anything on a Tex mex menu.

Anything teriyaki style with shrimp sauce.

Add in a couple of trips to QuikTrip and you have my full menu for the week.
