For the record, I love the new look, especially black on black and white on white. Not a huge fan of the grey or the black/white and white/black combos. Also, count me as one who is a fan of the new helmets. Love the matte AND the black block A. I think it will stand out with the yellow outline more than most people seem to. Overall I'm very pleased. I think we are really trying to look the FBS part.
I just wonder how the new logo will show up on TV. The white A is very easy to recognize from a distance and on TV, but this logo will probably get lost on the black helmet.
Worse yet, how will that logo look stuck to the window of an SUV, especially one with tinted windows?
I'm with you. One classic block A for everything and one Yosef logo everywhere. It seems like getting the new logo helmets will be an unnecessary expense. I doubt the old ones could be recycled and having new logos put on, as they probably require new helmets altogehter.[/quote]

They are decals. We could change to a new logo every week if we wanted to without replacing any helmets. As a matter of fact when I was a manager I did replace many "block A's" and stripes each week because they were torn during a game or practice. That was a Saturday morning ritual, changing decals and waxing the helmets so they would shine. Sometimes we even replaced them during games if they were torn badly.
I even remember when I played in high school that one season our decals didn't come in until our first game day. It was a road game and we put the decals on our helmets while on the bus going to the game.

Why do you think it's a permanent change for all logos?
I hope it's not. If this is a change merely to the block A on the football helmets, then the priceless "look" and brand awareness we've created over the past three decades can be easily re-done once this fad runs its course. If this is a sweeping brand change throughout the athletics department (which I don't think it is), then we've made another misstep in the name of trendiness, faux marketing and change-for-change sake.

The way I look at it, it could have been worse. We could be Maryland or North Carolina or Oregon or any number of schools that uses this gimmick to boost retail sales. We took a fairly modest approach to this phenomenon. I'm disappointed that we followed the herd, but comforted in knowing that it could have been worse.
I hear ya. I think the flying Yosef head is a much bigger faux pas than the black block A.

I just find it funny that some are griping about tradition being thrown to the side because of the black block A, but have no problem wanting to get rid of yellow as our gold--which has actually been around longer than the white block A.

See. With the matte black finish, we're saving on helmet wax. :D

Boy, you need to have better insight before you start shooting off your mouth. Some of those "Old Southern Men" have been at the forefront of change at ASU years before you were born.
So, you agree that our yellar version of gold is now "tradition?" It's older than the current white block A.
Nope! Old gold was ASU's color from the 20's until 1983. Yellar has about 30 more years to go until it catches up.

The Block A was an addition to our logos the newer gold replaced old gold. Big difference. The gold being used today is much lighter than what was being used in the 80's.

For the record I do like the A on the front of the helmet but wish it wasn't that outlined thing.

Because no gold helmet has been worn since we were demoted to 1-AA / FCS.

Your post just gave me a great idea. Since you guys say we need to change things up to signify our move to FBS, considering we had gold helmets during our days at the highest level of D-I and only witched to black during the 1-aa years it makes perfect sense to go BACK to real gold and gold helmets now that ASU is headed back into the highest level.

Ok here is an idea. Instead of spending money on expansion let's buy new AND DIFFERENT uniforms and helmets for EVERY game. From what is being said we will be able to sign every recruit we want. How about cleats? White, Black, Gold, gold and Black, white and black. I say yes different cleats for every game. The possibilities never end. How about we paint the field a different color every game? I am getting into this.
Give us your ideas. I am positive I have only scratched the surface.

I put on the gold helmet without logo in my day. Yes, I,m old and perhaps old fashion. I like the new uniforms and helmets because that's the way uniforms and helmets are going these days. I like being a fashion setter. We need to be out front and attacking, that's what the uniforms stand for. But, I'm equally old fashion. For example, I like the Alabama helmets, simple and old fashion, but those helmets are recognizable anywhere. They represent football tradition at its best. The block white A represents tradition also. It singles us out. As we gain football stature around the country and we will, I want all college football fans to identify the black helmet with the block A as helmets of Appalachian State University. The white block A is our standard. The black block A is perfectly fine for now and then.

Now that I see the glossy black "A" on the matte helmet it's not too shabby looking although I still prever the white one. I'm not going to get riled over it either way; just win, baby! Also being a child of the '70's you can't ever go wrong with old school Yosef! However I would just one time before I get too old to watch or make it up the mountain, see a real old gold helmet with a black old school Yosef; just for old time's sake.
We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

I really don't see the black "A" as a change in any official logo. That version has been around for a long time. I had a baseball cap with that logo on it 5 years ago. I just think the white version LOOKS better on the helmet. The black version on the sleeves works just fine for me.

Since the logo is just a decal, we could frankly switch it up at any time...which I like. I'm guessing that we see it a while and the PTB then move back to the white version based on the feedback they receive.

So, years of existence do matter. I was concerned that you were basing tradition on something else given that yellow has been around longer than the white block A which you call "tradition."

So, which is it? You took issue with using the black block A because we were messing with the tradition of the white block A, as well as poor marketing. Now, you admit that the white block A was simply an addition to our logos (did you feel so emotional about the addition of the white block A to our helmets), so why can't the black block A simply be an addition without it messing with tradition?

I get why you say there's a big difference, but the underlying point remains. The white block A began its "tradition" in 1989. The yellow as gold began its tradition in 1983 which you say is not tradition. The way I see it is either both the white block A and the yellow as gold are tradition or neither is tradition.

With all of that said, the change has been made so we're really just wasting key strokes. I just think some people are getting all riled up needlessly. I don't see us messing with "tradition" in the least, and certainly don't see the black block A becoming our permanent logo. It seems to me to be much ado about nothing.
